Getting to Know the Women of WIIT
What was your first job?  I wrote for my hometown newspaper, the Kennett Paper, when I was 15 – I even landed a front page story about how the town clock was broken. But since they didn’t pay me I consider waitressing my first real job. As the youngest server I got the worst shifts and I had to pay for my own food so that ended up not being particularly lucrative either.

How did you get your start working in trade? I’ve been a trade nerd for an embarrassingly long time. After loving my international political economy class at Penn State, I went to Washington to intern with the Coalition of Service Industries. I loved DC, going to the Hill, and trade deals – so much so that I wanted to write them. After law school and a law firm start I got my dream job at USTR where I did get to help negotiate and write trade deals.

What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in your career? I’m better at doing things I love.

What’s your favorite travel destination? Spain has had my heart since I studied abroad in college. The love of art history stuck, the Spanish did not. My travel bucket list is mostly organized around art I hope to be lucky enough to see in person – but during the pandemic I mostly traveled to Connecticut to visit my nephew. He is no Picasso but improving every day.
Introducing WIIT Programming!
Africa & Middle East

The Africa & Middle East Program Section focuses on issues relating to U.S. trade in and with Africa and the Middle East. We examine industry-specific opportunities and challenges as well as political and policy dynamics that may affect country and business relations. We also hope to foster relationship-building efforts with women leaders in both regions. Recent programs have included sessions on women and development in the Middle East, America’s energy exports and the role of the next administration in Middle East Policy. Stay tuned for new programs to be announced soon!

On August 9th, WIIT held an in-person event on the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity.
