CAME Spotlight: Carla Lewis

Carla, Project Manager SPARC352 Mellon Award, is a former nurse who works as a community organizer and activist in East Gainesville. She started the Greater Duval Neighborhood Association, a resident-based advocacy group to address gentrification in East Gainesville. Because of that work, she was invited to present a TED talk for UF on putting partnership before protest and sought to build a better relationship with the University. She was first introduced to her current work in the Arts as a community advisor for the SPARC352 initiative before becoming the Project Manager.

Carla led a team of other members in organizing and actualizing the first Summer Apprenticeship Program that took place at Duval Education Center from 11th to 29th July, 2022. The program was part of the SPARC352 Initiative.

Entrepreneurial Responses to the COVID Era

Journal of Art Entrepreneurship Education

University of Florida Scholars José Valentino Ruiz, Derris Lee, and Chris Shelton published an article in the Journal of Arts Entrepreneurship Education. The empirical research study uncovered solutions for musicians to navigate company survivability, sustainability, growth, and impact within the Post-COVID multimodal creative economy and also provides a descriptive analysis of the new era. Ruiz, Lee, and Shelton qualitatively analyzed top-tier music professionals who not only thrived amid the pandemic but also helped other music companies survive and flourish, and thus, introduced the first ever "COVID Response Model" for arts entrepreneurial educators and practitioners.
