Welcome to the first edition of the Mayors Migration Council's quarterly newsletter! Here we will share the latest news about mayoral leadership on global migration and displacement and upcoming opportunities for action.

Global Mayors Deliver Critical Momentum at UN Migration Conference

Mayors united in New York City for the first UN International Migration Review Forum (IMRF). They launched a Call to Local Action for Migrants and Refugees and delivered 70 city-led pledges to the President of the General Assembly, showcasing how local action equals national success.

|
MMC Leadership Board mayors met in-person to set their strategy for the IMRF and the year ahead. They celebrated two new mayors joining the Board — Mayor Carolina Cosse of Montevideo and Mayor Md. Atiqul Islam of Dhaka North — who strengthen the Board’s regional and gender diversity.

New Research on Municipal Finance, Data Collection, and Climate Migration
|
|
Our latest knowledge products offer compelling new insights on emerging and critical migration policy frontiers.
Municipal Finance: With UCLG, UNCDF, and UN-Habitat, we issued a Brief on Municipal Finance for Migrants and Refugees that offers concrete recommendations to unlock financing for more inclusive cities.
Urban Mixed Migration: The 4Mi Cities Reports share findings from our pilot data collection project with the Mixed Migration Center, which surveyed urban migrants and displaced people in Arua, Barranquilla, Kampala, Medellin, Mexico City, and Nairobi.
Climate Migration: Our Brief on Climate Migration, with research from Columbia University, found that more than 10 million climate migrants may move to urban centers in Mexico and Central America by 2050.

Local Leadership in Action: Beirut, Lebanon
|
|
It has been one year since the launch of the Municipality of Beirut's first Mobile Health Clinic, which was one of the first projects funded by the MMC's Global Cities Fund for Migrants and Refugees. Since launching, the clinic has delivered Covid-19 vaccines to more than 2,000 people—more than half of them foreign-born. The clinic is continuing to expand its health care services from emergency vaccination to ongoing health services, now offering primary health care screenings, blood drives for children, and breast cancer awareness events.
“We’ve been able to provide critical healthcare services—regardless of ability to pay or migration status—to those who would otherwise be left behind," said Mayor Jamal Itani.

- MMC Leadership Board members and local leaders will convene on the sidelines of the UNHCR High Commissioner's Dialogue to exchange best practices on urban refugee inclusion.
