President Biden Signs Inflation Reduction Act - Called a "Game Changer" by Congressman Case
President Biden signed the big climate, health care and tax policy legislation into law on Tuesday. Congressman Ed Case called the legislation a “game changer” for Hawaii.
 
“In Hawaii, we are one of the leaders in the entire country and world in terms of moving to renewables and this will help us on that path to get to full renewable in Hawaii. As if that wasn’t enough for one bill, it contains major initiatives in terms of controlling prescription drug prices, which are going to directly benefit some 300,000 Medicare beneficiaries in Hawaii,” Case said in an exclusive interview with Spectrum News.

The legislation also includes $25 million that will go to the Office of Native Hawaiian Relations at the Department of the Interior for Native Hawaiian climate resilience and adaptation activities. Native Hawaiian-serving nonprofits may also be eligible to receive additional funding from the bill for coastal community climate resilience, forest restoration and conservation, deployment of zero-emission technologies, and environmental and climate justice block grants.

2022 Rim of the Pacific

On the latest episode of Military in Hawaii, host Jay Fidell connected with James Dobson, Lieutenant Commander of the Royal Australian Navy. As the 28th Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC), a biennial international maritime exercise, comes to a close, Fidell and LCDR Dobson discussed the international relationships and involvement in the month long event.

Hawaii Awarded $16.4 Million for Federal
Good Jobs Challenge Grant

Hawaii has been awarded a $16.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce to establish an industry-led regional workforce training system. The “Resilient Hawaii: Good Jobs Challenge” initiative is a three-year project that will create economic resilience and prosperity for Hawaii by investing in four industry sectors: Information Technology, Healthcare, Clean Energy and Creative Industries. 

The initiative will expand industry-driven Sector Partnerships, train thousands of workers statewide in the sectors identified as priorities for the state, and provide jobseekers with wraparound support services. The initiative will have a focus on Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities to help provide equitable participation. 

In addition to continuing to lead the IT Sector Partnership, the Chamber will collaborate with Healthcare Association of Hawaii (HAH) on the Healthcare Sector Partnership and use its years of Sector Partnership experience to lead a Community of Practice among sector conveners, fostering collaboration, sharing best practices, and providing technical assistance. 

The University of Hawaii Community Colleges submitted the grant application in collaboration with the Chamber, HAH, DBEDT and Hawaii State Energy Office. The application was among 32 grant recipients selected from a competitive pool of 509 applicants.

Hana Career Pathways Renews Subsidized Certification and Training Programs for Hawaii Residents

University of Hawaii Community Colleges released its fall 2022 Hana Career Pathways courses with expanded eligibility requirements to assist more residents! The short term certification and training program  will increase employment paths to in-demand living-wage jobs in three resilient sectors—healthcare, technology and skilled trades—to support a thriving, diverse and resilient Hawaii. 

Tuition may be free for qualified Hawaii residents, including incumbent workers. Local employers are invited to refer their employees to apply for training to support earning industry certifications, upskilling and advancement in career pathways.
