Vale Lyall Gerring
To our Members, Legends, Family and Friends ,
It is with great sadness that I share the loss of a stalwart of the WA Sharpies,
Life Member, past patron, Lyall Gerring.
Lyall was originally a talented rower in his 20s and was persuaded to take up sailing for
his fitness and so began crewing for Ken Cook in the H/W Sharpie 'Jason' No4 at FSC in 1956.
Sailing Sharpies then took over in 1959. Lyall built his own L/W Sharpie 'Shannon - WA 100 '
and sailed it out of Nedlands with'Steves' pub as the club and later at MBSC where he and Joy
became active members eventually becoming Commodore.
Lyall and Joy were always part of the Sharpie family at Mounts Bay. They had their own ex-cray boat 'Shannon' and supported all the association events as the start boat travelling as far as Mandurah to start the State Championships back in the 80s and 90s aided by Mark and Fran Manning (ex Hoskings) in their launch.
Lyall and Joy were always regulars at all the Sharpie events assisting where they could,
caring for the association trophies and sashes and even making a few trophies
himself and his own 'Perpetual Patrons Trophy'.
Together their dedication and support to the WA Sharpies and Mounts Bay Sailing Club
was incomparable.
Later in life the Gerrings retired in Mandurah to be closer to their family.
On behalf of the WA Sharpie Sailing Association we offer our deepest condolences to Joy and family.
Lyall will always hold a special place in the history of the
WA Sharpies and here at Mounts Bay Sailing Club.
RIP
Lyall Gerring
