Mulch volcanoes

We have been recommending mulch reduction a lot lately and I wanted to share a little more about why this is important. Mulch is very important and beneficial for trees and plants, but the depth has to be kept under control. It is recommended that no mulch or soil be placed against the trunk of the tree. When the mulch and soil is against the trunk the trunk can rot because it’s not meant to be under ground. Also, roots can grow upward and around the trunk essentially strangling the tree. If you have trees that do not show a “root flare” at the base of the tree your tree probably needs the base exposed. Below are some pictures showing examples of problems we have come across because of “mulch volcanoes”. Please let us know if you would like a free consultation.

Proper mulching is very beneficial to trees, I highly recommend if your tree is surrounded by grass that you consider a ring of mulch. Here is a list of benefits:

  1. Helps maintain soil temperatures, warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

  2. Reduces soil compaction.

  3. Keeps string trimmers and lawn mowers away from the trunk.

  4. Improves soil moisture retention.

  5. Promotes proper root growth.

  6. Reduces competition from weeds and grass.

Just remember to keep the mulch depth to 3” or so and not against the trunk. Also remember that using extended control weed control products like Roundup 365 can damage or kill your tree.
