Klein Tafelberg Adventure Centre Launches

Situated in the Sandveld, between the towns of Redelinghuys and Aurora, and only two and a half hours drive from Cape Town, the Klein Tafelberg Adventure Centre has officially opened its doors – great news for adventure enthusiasts.

Klein Tafelberg has already made a name for itself amongst 4x4 fans because of its spectacular 4X4 route, not to mention the breathtaking landscapes and beautiful sunsets.

Now, outdoor enthusiasts can look forward to the addition of a new 2km hiking trail that snakes around the foot of the mountain and explores some of the caves found here, three new shooting ranges, 33 campsites with water and electricity at each site, three fully equipped 2-bedroom chalets, as well as three remote mountain campsites only accessible by 4x4.
The 4x4 route at the Klein Tafelberg Adventure Centre in the heart of the West Coast Sandveld, is a scenic and adventure-filled trail snaking along sandy fynbos-covered veld and slopes and making its way into the weathered sandstone formations of the Klein Tafelberg to viewpoints that reveal beautiful vistas.

MEMBERS MEETINGS

The first amalgamated members' meeting took place on Wednesday, 25 May 2022 at Dunn’s Castle in Piketberg. This will become a quarterly meeting where members get informed about current projects as well as get a chance to feature their products.
In July we had our second quarterly members' meeting at Soverby Lapa, Velddrif. A big thank you to all the members that attended and a special thanks to our guest speaker Pierre Goldman from BUILD Marketing for your insights into Google Business. We could not forget Berg Coffee, for keeping us all warm with their new pour-over coffee bags. We can't wait to do it all again in a few month's time!

Information and proposed clearing method for the invasive species:
Syringa treeSyringa berries are highly toxic.

Prof Cheryl McCrindle
February 19, 2019, at 2:37 pm
“Syringa berries are highly toxic to livestock as well as children and dogs, warns Prof Cheryl McCrindle of the University of Pretoria. No specific treatment is available, so caution is advised.
n spring, ripe syringa berries that lie thickly under the trees are often eaten by sheep and goats, pigs, and horses.
The bitter, wrinkled, yellow berries are usually consumed before the rains come when the grass has been grazed to the roots, and the animals are not receiving any hay supplement.
Although common in South Africa, the tall syringa tree (Melia azedarach) with its scented lilac flowers and dark green leaves, is not indigenous. It was originally imported here from India as an ornamental plant.
The ripe berries are toxic to children as well as livestock, rabbits, guinea pigs, and dogs.
Although deaths have been described in chickens, syringa berries do not seem to affect wild birds, and some species spread the seeds to new areas.”

The scientific name for Syringa is Melia azedarach
Two sets of legislation regulate the declaration and control of invasive alien species in South Africa: the Conservation of Agricultural Resources Act (43 of 1983, CARA) and the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (Act 10 of 2004, NEMBA). Although NEMBA was intended to replace the invasive species provisions of CARA, CARA’s regulations have not been repealed and remain in force.
It is a Category 1b or 3 Invader in urban areas.
Category 1b species must be controlled and wherever possible, removed and destroyed. Any form or trade or planting is strictly prohibited.
Category 3 plants are also declared ‘invaders’ and may no longer be planted, although existing plants may be retained outside of watercourses so long as steps are taken to prevent their spread.

Large spreading tree up to 20 m in height with reddish brown, smooth bark. Serrated dark green glossy leaves. Clusters of purple to lilac flowers. Produces abundant marble-sized, pale yellow berries which often remain on the tree for a year or more.
Invades streams and riparian areas, establishing and growing rapidly in disturbed areas and replacing indigenous vegetation. Berries are poisonous.
Clearing method:
Cut Stump and spray with Hatchet at 3%. No need for wetter or dye, it is included.

Bergrivier Municipality: Invasive Species Monitoring, Control and Eradication Plan dated June 2020 is available on the Bergrivier Municipal website.
