Synthesizing Classical Raga Tradition with European and American Jazz |
Producer Bob Attiyeh from Yarlung says “Something magical can happen when two rivers meet, two traditions collaborate, or two talented friends work hard on a joint creation. Paul Livingstone on sitar and Pete Jacobson on cello take inspiration from the Hindustani musical tradition. Paul’s teacher and mentor Ravi Shankar who collaborated so eloquently with Yehudi Menuhin on violin and helped to popularize Hindustani music in the West. Pete and Paul also draw inspiration from American jazz improvisation. Sangam, in Hindi, means many things, including “confluence,” or the blending of two people, ideas or traditions into something fresh and new. |
|
We used the natural acoustics of the recording hall to give you natural reverb and decay, “filtered” as it is by the beautiful affect soft adobe has on sound reflections. And using SonoruS Holographic Imaging technology, we present the album in an enveloping soundstage, where the sitar surrounds you in a warm embrace. |

The first time I was touched by the story of Jesus was in my early childhood in elementary school at about the age of six. I remember we had a wise, elderly and very elegant Bible class teacher. She spoke about five languages and often read to us from foreign books, not only translating but simplifying themes as well. Somehow, she was always able to connect these different books, these different tales to Jesus; through his teachings and deeds. Once, during a school event I played J.S. Bach’s Prelude in C minor (BWV 999). I had a terrible stage fright, after all the whole school was watching, and it was my first public performance. My teacher was really touched by my humble piano playing and said that I played the keys like Jesus walked on water. She told me that Bach is the most important composer in music history and the closest person to God, the closest person to Jesus. At that moment somehow, I understood at this very young age that our whole cultural existence is based upon the existence of Jesus Christ: music, literature, fine arts; everything is connected to him. From that moment J.S. Bach became my favorite composer. The way his melodies, his polyphonous leads develop in his compositions is like a never-ending energy that moves nature; as the leaves grow on trees and die and grow again in an infinitive circle in a time-lapse video recording. His music imitates the whole eternal cycle of life that is being triggered by an irresistible outside force. This is the essential moving force I wanted to represent in my music. Not to imitate Bach but to follow the substantive nature of things that Bach followed and tell stories to modern humankind in a traditional way through an up-to-date language. Gábor Benda, Piano |

New Review |
|
It is no secret that High-Resolution Super Audio is under pressure. Over the years, some labels have given up altogether. Streaming has become the norm, so it seems. We, the ‘niche’ crowd, are indebted to all those still operating at the sharp end of quality, and to Native DSD for passing on the best sound to the discerning music-loving community. Despite several connoisseurs maintaining the view that music is more important than sound, I beg to differ with such a limited vision. And I’m surely not the only one. In my book, enjoying music in any realistic measure, sound quality does matter. Not only does it restore warmth and refined details, but also the original dynamics and thus the emotional impact. I know, in an audience as sophisticated as on this site, it is like preaching to the choir. […] |

A composer who demonstrates quite literally what it means to be a ‘Romantic’With the release of this live recording of Hector Berlioz’s ‘Symphonie Fantastique’, RCO Live celebrates the start of its collaboration with Daniele Gatti as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra’s Seventh Chief Conductor on September 9, 2016. His unconventional take on this spectacular score evokes the astonishment audiences must have experienced at the time of the 1830 premiere. It is exactly this sense of surprise and freshness – founded on a thorough knowledge of the score – and the sheer joy of making music together, that prompted the members of the RCO to choose Daniele Gatti as their new Chief Conductor. Conductor Daniele Gatti tells us: “Berlioz enriched my stay in Paris immeasurably. Not just with the orchestra, but as an ordinary citizen. I lived in the city, I had a little apartment, and I experienced the city like a Parisian. I read a lot of history, I’m mad about the French Revolution, and I became aware how at that historic, epic moment, the world changed completely. Not just in politics, but also in the arts. The Enlightenment developed into the Sturm und Drang of the Romantic era. Berlioz is the clearest example of that, a composer who demonstrates quite literally what it means to be a ‘Romantic’ in a very personal sense: to consider the ordinary as extraordinary, the familiar as strange, the everyday as sacred, and the finite as infinite. In September of 2014, I conducted Roméo et Juliette with the Orchestre National, and it was then that I said, before I leave Paris I also want to do the Symphonie fantastique.” |
