Many years ago, I found myself in the crosshairs of my supervisor. It is a long, funny, and touching story about falling in love, learning to adapt to a new culture, and accepting that distance actually just might make the heart grow fonder.
All of this was lost on my supervisor, as he found out that my partner and I were breaking one of the fundamental rules related to our positions. And he found out only because my partner wrote a letter that was read on a variety show that was transmitted globally on BBC World Service. In that letter, she asked that the radio presenter play "Love Will Keep Us Together" by Captain & Tennille. Why? "Because my boyfriend hates that song."
Too funny!
While my dislike for the song may still hold true, the song's title resonates with me on a much deeper level today. Here's why….

Inflation and Indiana School District Budgets
|
|
~by Dr. Larry DeBoer
June 21, 2022
The inflation rate in May was 8.6 percent, the highest since the bad old days of the Great Inflation 40 years ago. We’re all paying higher prices. So are our school districts.
School districts face some costs that increase as prices rise, and other costs that don’t. Food, fuel and equipment prices rise, and schools must pay. But teacher salaries are set in contracts, and until those contracts expire, inflation won’t have an effect.

Tara was born and raised in Charlestown, IN- Clark County. She graduated from Ball State University with honors and earned a BS in Family and Consumer Sciences Education. She comes to Extension with over a decade of teaching experience and claims it has been a culmination of her various roles in education, paired with personal interests, that she felt led to this new opportunity and is blessed to call Purdue Extension Harrison County her new professional home.
Throughout her time in education, she has taught an array of courses & topics under the FCS framework and devoted much of her time toward many school and community efforts, including coaching and co-advising various clubs and events. In her first teaching position, Tara was also instrumental in the inception and implementation of a corporation-wide community service program on the Southside of Indianapolis as the district's first Community Service Coordinator. The program continues today, and she attributes her passion for community-focused endeavors in large part to this role. In her most recent school corporation, she served as a Co-Coordinator for the Cougar Color Run, an annual non-profit event aimed at raising funds for a chosen beneficiary within the community. Tara also enjoys serving in other leadership capacities, such as her district's Social Emotional Learning committee, and is passionate about mental well-being strategies and education focused on creating healthy life rhythms related to areas of Health & Human Sciences.
Since accepting a teaching position here in 2016, Tara has resided in Harrison County with her husband, Matt, a native of the county who grew up participating in 4-H Beef Cattle projects, and their two young daughters, Grace & Maelyn. Tara is a self-proclaimed foodie and coffee junkie who enjoys spending time with her family, practicing yoga, and researching and planning their next ventures and gatherings.
