Thank you for a great summer!

It has been an outstanding summer that has celebrated community and lifelong learning.  We are very grateful for all our grant makers and community partners, who made this joyful summer possible and accessible to all.

Fall plans are underway, and I will send out that newsletter with all the fall programs at a later date.

Meanwhile, please see below for an important message from the Library Board of Trustees regarding our historic building.  Thank you always for your kind support.

Be well.  Be safe.  Be kind.

Our Historic Building

We are justifiably proud of our public library! The Jaffrey Public Library is well known as a small-town library that offers “big city” programs and services. Another source of pride is our beautiful library building. Dedicated in 1895, our building is a wonderful example of the Romanesque Revival style and is widely admired for its iconic double brick chimneys and grand arched entry.

The Jaffrey Public Library is currently listed in the National Register of Historic Places as a “contributing historic structure” within the Downtown Jaffrey National Register Historic District. It is our hope, by taking a series of steps, that our building may be added to the National Register of Historic Places in its own right. We have been awarded a Certified Local Government grant to help us achieve this goal.  Additionally, we have received a grant from the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance to fund an assessment of the historic features of the library building, to provide the trustees an accurate guide of how to approach future preservation efforts.

We are writing to you as library trustees, asking you to support these efforts. There is a matching component to one of the grants. Please consider making a donation, payable to the Jaffrey Public Library, indicating “historic preservation” on your check. A couple of Jaffrey residents have already made gifts toward this important undertaking. Any funds over the matching requirement will only be used for historic preservation efforts.

The trustees consider this to be one element of a broader initiative to preserve our beautiful building and showcase local history. As you know, the library collection includes many important items related to Willa Cather and Amos Fortune. We are custodians of Jaffrey’s original “Social Library” and have recently added a new interactive history display on the third floor. We are undertaking a revision of the Library Trustees Bylaws and once that is complete, plan to establish a new trust fund for preservation of our building as well as our collection and programs related to local Jaffrey history. Stay tuned – more to come on this.

Thank you for your support.
