ASERL is seeking applicants for Visiting Program
Officer - BIPOC Networking
A major activity for ASERL in the year ahead is the development of a new set of programming top support BIPOC librarians and staff working in ASERL libraries. ASERL is currently seeking applicants to serve as our Visiting Program Officer for BIPOC Networking. In this role, the VPO will work alongside ASERL's Elaina Norlin for approximately a year to define, describe, and implement am array of online and in-person activities to support career development for members of the BIPOC community in ASERL libraries. ASERL members Support Five-Year Budget Projection
On July 27, ASERL deans and directors met for their summertime online update session. In addition to hearing about ongoing activities, attendees weighed a proposal from the ASERL Board of Directors that includes a five-year budget projection for the Association (for fiscal year 2024 - 2028). The projection includes modest increases in membership dues to cover anticipated costs. A secure online poll was conducted as part of this discussion, resulting in 97% approval from participating deans/directors for the proposal. The ASERL Board and staff will begin working to implement the activities included in the proposal.

Coming Soon: A new website for ASERL!
ASERL will soon launch its new website, featuring increased functionality for our large archive of professional development content, features to highlight interesting collections held by our member libraries, a "member spotlight" to share the stories of important volunteers in our community, and a job board to help ASERL libraries recruit new talent. Expect a launch party announcement to arrive on/about September 1st. Our thanks to everyone who has contributed to the development of the new site over the past year!

ASERL Expands Oral History Collection
ASERL will rekindle its partnership with the University of Kentucky's Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History to expand its collection of oral history interviews with leaders who played key roles in ASERL's growth and development over the years. ASERL first collaborated with the Nunn Center in 2016 to collect ten interviews with its earliest leaders. This new project seeks to grow that history, reflecting ASERL's growth from a social organization to one of the leading voices in American research library cooperation. As she did in 2016, Jennifer A. Bartlett, Oral History Librarian at the University of Kentucky Libraries' Special Collections Research Center, will lead the 2022 project. The interview sessions will each be 60 - 90 minutes in length, and are expected to begin in early Summer 2022. The new collection will be released to the public in coordination with ASERL's Fall 2022 Membership Meeting.

We are back!
As of August 9, ASERL's Professional Development Webinar series is back after a much-needed. Upcoming popular webinars include "Cultivating Civility and Resilience in Libraries: Challenges and Solutions" (August 16 -- 274 registrants) and "Racial Equity: Hiring, Retention, and Promotion of BIPOC Employees" (September 19 -- 304 registrants).
Additional upcoming DEI-related webinars include "Equity Mentorship Pilot Program: Making a Difference with BIPOC Retention" and "Looking at Virginia Shared Collections through a DEI Lens: Increasing Equity and Representation." LAA / Accessibility Highlights
ASERL is a founding partner of the Library Accessibility Alliance; other partners include the Big Ten Academic Alliance, Greater Western Library Alliance, and Washington Research Library Consortium. Together, this group conducts ongoing tests of popular library e-resources to assess their compliance with accessibility standards. The group also hosts a continuing series of online sessions to build knowledge and skills among librarians and staff with an interest in improving accessibility for users. Currently, the LAA has three workshops scheduled for the Fall, with more in development. See https://libraryaccessibility.org/events for more information. |

Shared Print Highlights
More titles protected in Scholars Trust!
As a result of their “Single Copy” project, our colleagues at WRLC have committed an additional 4,500 print journal titles for retention in Scholars Trust. As of June, Scholars Trust has a combined list of 60,470 titles.
Town Hall Meeting on September 21
Please save the date! The Fall Scholars Trust Town Hall e-meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 21, 2022 2pm CT | 3PM ET. This meeting will seek your input on a proposed new governance structure for Scholars Trust and provide an update on other activities.

Gap-Fill Pilot Project
Scholars Trust libraries use the Journal Retention and Needs Listing (JRNL) tool to identify holding commitments, facilitate deselection decisions, and to fill gaps in retained titles. These JRNL Oversight Committee recently created a year-long pilot project to expand access to libraries that may wish to support shared print through gap-filling but are not affiliated with a library consortium registered to use the tool. SERS Conference Update
ASERL is serving as a sponsor of the Southeast Resource Sharing (SERS) conference again this year. The 2020 conference was sidetracked by COVID; the organizers are excited to welcome people to participate later this Fall. The conference will take place on October 13 - 14 in Nashville, with Tina Baich, Associate Dean for Scholarly Communication & Content Strategies at IUPUI University Library, as the keynote speaker.
