Commemorate Black August:
Remember George & Jonathan Jackson,
Free Ruchell Magee and all Political Prisoners!

Rest in Power Albert Woodfox!

Albert Woodfox, who passed away in freedom this week, raises his fist upon his release from prison after 43 years of torturous solitary confinement.
There are many other still-incarcerated political prisoners facing critical health issues, or in some cases near death. We must redouble our efforts to free Dr. Mutulu Shakur, Leonard Peltier, Mumia Abu-Jamal and others.

Dr. Mutulu Shakur turns 72 for example on August 8, during Black August. Learn more about  the Free Mutulu NOW Campaign and how to get involved, visit https://linktr.ee/FreeMutuluNow
Also be sure to check out

Black August: Youth at the Vanguard of Resistance
Community Meeting - Tuesday August 9th at 6PM
Previous Meetings and Webinars HERE

Join us for our monthly webinar for the fight against the War on Youth. This month we will be celebrating Black August, a month in which we honor incarcerated Black freedom fighters and their legacy of resistance that continues today. We'll be joined by Harold Welton, a former SNCC organizer and Southern California Chapter Black Panther member, to talk about the historical targeting of youth at the forefront of revolutionary work and the importance of education in revolutionary work. Additionally, we'll hear from some youth organizers about the continuation of this culture of resistance. The evening's webinar will conclude with a call to action, and actionable steps to support incarcerated freedom fighters.  Join the fight!

Many of the same far-right groups and networks involved in the Capitol attack have adapted their activity to fit the new environment. These adaptations have manifested in multiple ways: the landscape of actors has become more defined; demonstration engagement has shifted, with a focus on protests that allow for the co-option of new supporters; some actors, like the Proud Boys, have increased their use of violence; armed protests have proliferated, particularly at legislative facilities; contentious counter-demonstration trends have intensified; offline propaganda and vigilantism is on the rise, especially motivated by white supremacy and white nationalism; and preparatory actions have surged, including recruitment drives and training exercises.

ACLED data indicate that political violence in the United States, and specifically violence involving far-right militias and militant social movements, typically manifests in peaks and lulls. Against this backdrop, the recent decline in aggregate events should not be taken as a sign that the threat of violence has abated. On the contrary, current trends indicate that it may only represent a relative calm before the next storm.

Law enforcement agencies across the country have failed to provide us with even basic information about the lives they have taken. While the Federal government announced in 2016 that they would begin collecting data on deadly force incidents, they have proved either unwilling or unable to do so. For example, their new Use of Force Data Collection program ended up collecting data from so few law enforcement agencies that the entire program could be shut down without the data they’ve collected being made available to the public.
We cannot wait to know the true scale of police violence against our communities. In a country where at least three people are killed by police every day, we cannot wait for police departments to provide us with these answers. The maps and charts on this site aim to provide us with insights into patterns of police violence across the country. They include information on more than 10,000 killings by police nationwide since 2013. 97 percent of the killings in our database occurred while a police officer was acting in a law enforcement capacity. Importantly, these data do not include killings by vigilantes or security guards who are not off-duty police officers.
This information has been meticulously sourced from official police use of force data collection programs in states like California, Texas and Virginia, combined with nationwide data from the Fatal Encounters database, an impartial crowdsourced database on police killings. We've also done extensive original research to further improve the quality and completeness of the data; searching social media, obituaries, criminal records databases, police reports and other sources to identify the race of 90 percent of all victims in the database.
We believe the data represented on this site is the most comprehensive accounting of people killed by police since 2013. Note that the Mapping Police Violence database is more comprehensive than the Washington Post police shootings database: while WaPo only tracks cases where people are fatally shot by on-duty police officers, our database includes additional incidents such as cases where police kill someone through use of a chokehold, baton, taser or other means as well as cases such as killings by off-duty police.

Excerpt from Black Agenda Report: The recent FBI raids conducted against the Uhuru Movement are part of an old U.S. playbook targeting Black radical organizations which assert their rights to speak in opposition to U.S. policies domestically and internationally.

FBI Attack on the Uhuru Movement is a Warning
by Margaret Kimberley
The FBI targeted the African People’s Socialist Party (APSP) because it is a Black organization that has dared to confront and oppose U.S. imperialism. APSP is the first but they will not be the last.
L.A. Liberals Seek to Criminalize the Unhoused; People Resist

Excerpt from Thorn West (DSA LA):

  • Los Angeles City Council held another vote on the proposed escalation of 41.18 anti-sit/lie/sleep enforcement. After Councilmembers Mike Bonin and Nithya Raman spoke against the motion, the public in attendance, essentially unanimous in opposition, chanted over Councilmember Joe Buscaino, one of the motion’s authors. In response, the council called recess. With chambers to themselves, those remaining, including many unhoused people and advocates, held an extended “public comment” session for people who had not had a chance to speak during the original public comment lottery. After an hour the space was ceded back to the council, who voted on their motion before a largely empty house. It passed 11–3 with Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson joining the opposition. “I don’t think it’s constitutional,” he said of the blanket ban. This was expected to be the last of several votes on this measure, but a last-minute amendment means it will need another vote, scheduled for Tuesday. Entire session live-tweeted here: https://twitter.com/JonnyPeltz/status/1554557022414073861

ARA Note: The City Councilors' preposterous claim that they are criminalizing houselessness to "protect" school kids flies in the face of the reality that tens of thousands of LAUSD students experience being unhoused at some point during every school year, because of the gentrification and displacement that these self-same "liberal" councilors enact and enforce.

The August monthly workshop for Committee For Racial Justice (CRJ) on Sunday 07 August 2022 will be held on zoom and will have the theme: Confronting Conspiracy Theories and Organized Bigotry at Home and in our Communities. CRJ is concerned about the increase in racial hatred and the level of violence escalating around the indoctrination and recruitment of young people into a white nationalist mind set. We would like to share some ideas about how to talk with people about the very real dangers to wellbeing and democracy as we know it in the US because of the messaging from the radical right that isn’t often effectively countered in our culture today and we will explore how all of this comes out of racism and fear.

Our resource person for this discussion is Professor Shelly Tochluk from Mount St. Mary’s, who is the author of Witnessing Whiteness and Living in the Tension. She spent ten years as a researcher, counselor, and teacher in California public schools and now trains teachers to work with LA’s diverse school population. Shelly also works with AWARE-LA (Alliance of White Anti Racists Everywhere) and has co-created a workshop series that leads white people into a deeper understanding of their personal relationship to race, white privilege, and systemic racism.

Although the expansion of white nationalist sentiment and conspiracy theories on the political far-right is well-documented, many dedicated to cultivating an inclusive democracy continue to view white nationalists as fringe players, dismissing their ability to make a real impact. Too many of us do not understand the scope of the threat, the alignment with organized hate groups, and the mechanisms of recruitment. To counter them, we need to understand how the far-right weaponizes white identity and the general failure of antiracists to adequately counter far-right claims. This presentation will also address how to engage with people susceptible to far-right ideas to interrupt recruitment into bigotry.

Researcher and professor Shelly Tochluk of AWARE-LA (Alliance of White Anti-Racists Everywhere) is the guest speaker at Santa Monica's Committee for Racial Justice this month.
