The Men’s Table was started in June 2011 when a dozen men sat down over a cheap meal in a private place to talk about what was really going on for them. In 2019 Ben Hughes, now a Launceston resident, and David Pointon decided to start more "Tables". They have now started 66 Tables nationally with 4 being in Launceston and 1 in George Town. The Men’s Table is where men come to be heard and to support other men, it is a great place to meet men who don’t just want to talk about “footy and s***.”

We are starting Tables in Hobart and Burnie.

This provides participants a safe environment to engage in skills, strategies and resources for their mental health in a group environment without having to attend in person.

These sessions will be co-facilitated by a Peer Practitioner and Mental Health Practitioner; the online program is interactive but there’s no pressure to engage; people can learn from each other and get some social connection without leaving their home.

Additionally, people no longer need a diagnosis to be eligible!

Many Australians have an experience of the mental health and suicide prevention system, whether they have reached out to a service, provided care and support to a family member or friend who has a lived or living experience of mental ill-health, or they are involved in delivering mental health or suicide prevention services.

The National Mental Health Commission will launch the Making Connections for Your Mental Health and Wellbeing (Connections2022) program. During this program, we invite you to share your experience of the mental health and suicide prevention system.

Connections2022 is an opportunity to share how the mental health system is working for you and your community, any challenges you have experienced that impact your mental health and wellbeing and thoughts about what a functioning mental health system would look like for you.

  • What has been the biggest challenge for your community in the past 2 years?
  • What has supported your mental health during those times?
  • How will you know when things are getting better for your mental health?
  • What improvements would you like to see happen in your community?
Your voice is vital to understanding what is and isn’t working and if real and impactful change is being made in communities across Australia. By sharing your experience, you can help the Commission to build evidence that shapes outcomes for future national mental health and suicide prevention reform.
  • Attend the Hobart community conversation by registering here (12 Sept)
  • Attend the Devonport community conversation by registering here (13 Sept)

For more information you can also call toll free 1800 220 246 or email community@making-connections.com.au

In an Australian first, a multicultural health collaborative will provide care and a voice to culturally and linguistically diverse people, many whose visas render them ineligible for Medicare. Currently run by the Federation of Ethnic Communities' Councils of Australia, the national initiative will provide health care to a growing population of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers.

Elite athletes given lump sum payments to help transition out of sports
For many athletes, the ‘come-down’ after competing in an Olympic games can cause severe mental ill health. The Australian Institute of Sport has started a new grant program aimed at helping athletes adjust. Matt Butterworth, clinical psychologist at the AIS, said that in 2018, the AIS conducted a mental health audit of athletes that found one-in-three Australian athletes were experiencing symptoms of depression or anxiety “to the level that you'd usually need to go and see someone about.”

Tasmanian Communications Charter

Did you know that Tasmania was the first state to adopt the National Communications Charter?

The Charter brings the community sector together with government and people with lived experience, promoting a common language around mental health, mental illness and suicide in Tasmania, so that together we can work to reduce stigma and promote help-seeking behaviour.

Have you signed the Charter? Head to the home page to take the online Charter course. Signing up to the Charter is the first step in speaking together for mental health and suicide prevention.

Sign the Charter, and help us reduce stigma and promote help-seeking behaviour in Tasmania.
