Needs Assessment and Service Coordination
The Needs Assessment and Service Coordination Service is for people with a physical, intellectual and or sensory impairment, or a disability that is likely to last longer than 6 months and reduces their ability to function independently.

As part of the Ministry of Health's Disability Support Service initiative to support NASC, a National Referrals Centre is being piloted and is now working alongside NASC Hawkes Bay using a 'NO WRONG DOOR' approach.

The referral process will not change, a person may self-refer, or any other person may refer on behalf of that person if they have the person's consent.

It is important to know that you can continue to send referrals to NASC Hawkes Bay (NASC.HB@hbdhb.govt.nz) and they will redirect your referral to the National Referrals centre, however the NRC is encouraging referrals to be made electronically via www.nrcentre.co.nz or email referrals can be made to referrals@nrcentre.co.nz

For those referrals that do not meet the eligibility criteria for Ministry of Health funded disability support services, you will be referred to a local organisation who will work with you to help you and your family connect with the support you need based on the same 'NO WRONG DOOR' approach.

Pukare Cards Update

Thank you for supporting Pūkare Cards

We are a team from Taradale High School taking part in the Young Enterprise Scheme and are dedicated to producing a simple strategy to help youth express their feelings. We believe having a strong understanding of emotions from a young age is crucial and will help us have a society more aware of the importance of talking about mental health. Tom (CEO) who struggled with ADHD as a child really would have benefited from a tool like this. Pūkare Cards was born from our own experiences to provide youth with the tools we didn’t have.

How can Pūkare Cards be used
For leading small to large group discussions.
For parents to help their children unpack how they are feeling.
For children to indicate to their parents how they are feeling.

Brick Buddies
Hey everyone,

There seems to be a few people interested in coming along to Brick Buddies,  so for anyone new, here is a quick run down of how things go!

We are in the Napier Family Centre in the playroom - we have a sign on the door so you know where to go.

When you come in please sanitise your hands and put on a name sticker (adults too!)

We have big containers of loose lego for imaginative creations and a variety of sets for those of us who prefer to have instructions.

We have a container of sensory items available to use while you're here - fidgets, air muffs, a wobble cushion, weighted vests and weighted teddies etc. Please return them to the container before you leave.

Adults, you can make yourself a cuppa in the kitchen. Please wash your cup afterwards

Taekwon-do fundraisers punch above their weight

Ben Evans is leading the New Zealand Team going to Argentina for the ITF World Cup Oct 4-10

Four months of intensive work is how NZ International Taekwon-Do Federation (NZITF) regional director and coach Ben Evans describes the fundraising campaign to get his squad off to the ITF World Cup in October.

The outstanding amount to purchase uniforms for the team finally came through, getting the team over the line and into uniforms last week.

"We started our campaign late March. How crazy, we really did push hard when we look back. We did so much in such a short time."

Redeployment of Air Filters
Air filtration units (AFUs) being donated to community providers.

The Ministry of Health is donating some of its stock of Air Filtration Units (AFUs), which were previously used to support the Managed Isolation and Quarantine Response, to disability community providers who would benefit from them.

Please note that:
  • while there is no upfront cost for these AFUs, there will be ongoing insurance, service and maintenance costs.
  • applications to receive a unit should be made by Friday 12th August 2022.

Information on the units:
  • The units include an advanced HEPA filter to aid in providing additional air filtration support.
  • These are IPC devices specifically designed to combine HEPA filtration with a patented system of active 24/7/365 protection against a range of pathogens (viral & bacterial, also mould, fungi, endospores etc).
  • ActivePure is the key technology in the units and is cleared by the FDA as a Class II medical device.
  • The units are plug & play into a power source and very flexible – the units are being used across critical hygiene areas, corridors, rooms, operating theatres, ICU, ED, offices, staff break areas/lunch rooms, meeting rooms etc.
  • The units need to be serviced & maintained on an annual cycle (all taken care of under the NZHP contract and ActivePure staff throughout NZ).

These AFU’s provide air management support in line with WHO Guidelines for Ventilation for COVID-19, as well as the Supplementary standard issued by the Dental Council.

The distribution of these AFUs is being treated as a donation, with no associated capital costs or charges. There will however be an ongoing cost of ownership, including insurance and future maintenance.

We have negotiated an annual maintenance arrangement for $650 or a discounted monthly fee of $45 per unit depending on the option selected. This fee covers replacement of all Original Equipment Manufacturer consumables annually to ensure the 5-year warranty.  It will be the responsibility of the Provider coordinate with the supplier (Big Blue) for provision of maintenance and payment of associated costs.

Please could all requests be sent to covid.healthsupplychain@health.govt.nz by Friday 12th August 2022 to confirm the quantity of AFUs requested.

After this date, the Ministry will proceed with alternative deployment options for unallocated stock.

Hawkes Bay Health
Consumer Council
The Hawke’s Bay Health Consumer Council (HBHCC) was set up mid-2013 and we are proud to say it was the first of its kind in New Zealand. Since then, consumer councils have been set up in several other regions.

HBHCC members have varied backgrounds and links to community groups and networks. This diversity helps us to make sure the council is a good representation of our community.

What does the Hawke’s Bay Health Consumer Council do?
  • It provides a strong and viable voice for the community and consumers in the areas of health service planning and delivery.
  • It works with Te Whatu Ora Te Matau a Maui Hawkes Bay (previously known as HBDHB) and Health Hawke’s Bay Ltd (Primary Health Organisation (PHO)) to help ensure our health system has consumers and whānau at its centre and it meets the needs of our people.
  • It seeks to enhance consumer experience and improve equity.
  • It provides input, comments, and feedback on many initiatives, as well as being involved in working and steering groups that support those initiatives.
The current health Consumer Council has served its mandated term and a new committee is being established.
The new Health Consumer Council will be meeting in October the for the first time and it looking to secure council members for the next 12 months.
There are four main areas of representation required are
  • Māori
  • Pasifica
  • Disability
  • Unmet Needs
This is a great opportunity to ensure all voices in the community are represented.

If you are interested and can represent one of the above consumer groups, or you know someone who would be a great advocate for one of the groups, please contact Kevin Watene for more information at Kevin.Watene@hbdhb.govt.nz
