EMERGENCY ANIMAL DISEASES UPDATE

With the detection of Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Lumpy Skin Disease in Indonesia recently, it is important landholders be extra vigilant – understand what to look for, check your animals regularly and report any suspect cases. 

Emergency animal diseases, particularly exotic diseases like Foot-and-Mouth and Lumpy Skin Disease can have a serious impact on livestock activity, trade and even human health. If you suspect or know of a notifiable animal disease, you have a legal obligation to report it immediately. 

Fortunately, Australia currently has a disease-free status for Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Lumpy Skin Disease. However we all need to play an active role in monitoring and reporting any suspect cases.  

Your support is essential to protect NSW’s clean reputation and ensure ongoing market access.  An early report can make the difference between something becoming establishing or being eradicated.  

Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Lumpy Skin Disease are nationally notifiable diseases. It is critical that:   

• all livestock owners know what these diseases look like 
• you check your animals regularly 
• you report any suspect signs immediately to your local district vet on 1300 295 299 or the Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888. 

Emergency Animal Diseases Workshops

We are holding a series of free, one-hour workshops for landholders to: 

• learn more about the current status of FMD and lumpy skin disease   
• find out how to identify these diseases and know what to do if they suspect cases  
• find out what they can do on their farm 
• hear what LLS does to prevent Emergency Animal Diseases 
• hear about the work of LLS in pest animal control.

FENCING NORTHERN BASIN RIVERBANKS

Landholders with frontage to waterways in the NSW northern Murray-Darling Basin are encouraged to lodge an Expression of Interest under round 2 of the NSW Fencing Northern Basin Riverbanks Program. 

The program offers incentive grants to landholders to protect sensitive riparian zones through stockproof fencing, alternate water points and a range of complementary measures with the aim of improving native fish populations and water quality.

BEES AND BROADACRE CROPS

As beekeepers across NSW respond to the Varroa Mite outbreak, many farmers are wondering what impact the restriction on bee movements this will have on broadacre crops across our region. 

Bees have long been considered beneficial to broadacre crops. But exactly how helpful are they?  

Pollination methods vary across different broadacre crops. Cereals like wheat, oats and barley are known as self-pollinators. Therefore, insects are typically of little benefit in improving pollination. Other crops cross pollinate and require pollen from another plant to achieve fertilisation. Some crop species, like maize, achieve this largely through wind pollination. However, many others benefit from insect pollination.

Like the web version, the smartphone app provides key information to help users reduce the impact of over 325 weeds in New South Wales.

Users, ranging from home gardeners and residents to farmers, land managers and weeds professionals, can search or browse weed names (common or scientific); recognise a weed by its physical description and image gallery; and find out about its impacts, where it occurs, how it spreads and its preferred habitat.

Control options are described for each weed and the herbicides registered for control by the Australian Pesticide and Veterinary Medicines Authority are listed, including application rates and techniques, and any minor-use permits that must be complied with.

General, state or regional biosecurity duties under the Biosecurity Act 2015 are displayed for each weed.
