Kia ora koutou
Today was our International Day at QPS. We had an opportunity to celebrate our biculturalism in a multicultural school. We have not been able to do this for the past couple of years due to COVID restrictions. Thank you so much for supporting this day by purchasing international food from our stalls and ensuring the children wore national dress. A myriad of flags were draped around the playground representing over 30 different ethnicities. At our assembly I talked to the school and community about the Maori words “Nga hau e wha” which translate to people blowing into our school from everywhere. QPS is a very special place to learn and play and for our students to interact with each other from all over the world. It is so interesting to watch them as they are consciously unbiased about race. Many of our students speak 2 or more languages which will hold them in good stead as they grow up and move around the world.
For the remainder of this year and into 2023, the senior leadership team, (SLT) will be working with an Education Review Officer (ERO). The ERO model has changed to better meet the needs of schools as they navigate annual and strategic goals. I am excited about this opportunity as this will also be a time to celebrate and identify the things we do well at QPS and where we can further improve. Mike Fowler, ex principal of Hagley College in Christchurch, now works for ERO. Mike will meet with us next week and we will share our QPS ‘story’. From there, we will formulate a plan for further discussions and visits.
