WISERD Conference 2022 Poster Competition Winners

Congratulations to the winners of the poster competition in the 2022 WISERD Annual Conference, held at Swansea University on 6-7 July.  The prize for 'best poster' was awarded to DTP student Melda Griffiths (Psychology, Cardiff University), whose research explores the effects of healthy vending in Welsh hospitals.  Prizes for second and third best posters were awarded to DTP students Jami Abramson (Human Geography, Swansea University) and John Poole (Economics, Cardiff University).  Well done all!

Changing Research Practices – Project Outputs

The third phase of the NCRM’s Changing Research Practices for Covid-19 project has concluded. The project aimed to chart how social research methods have been successfully adapted for, or designed for use within, the pandemic conditions of Covid-19 and this latest report ‘Phase II-III rapid evidence review’ provides a synthesis of the 2021 literature.  The wider findings and a substantive editorial will be published in a special issue of the International Journal of Social Research Methodology (Changing Research Practices – Methodological Responses to the Covid-19 Pandemic and Uncertain Futures), and an NCRM course will also be delivered around this on 3 October.

Market Research Society Pilot Internships

The ESRC is partnering with the Market Research Society to pilot 3 month internships with their business and industry members and is pleased to announce a new opportunity hosted by Bulbshare.  The internships are open to any ESRC Wales DTP funded student and successful applicants will receive an extension to their PhD equivalent to the duration of the internship.

Further details, including information on the host organisation, the project and person specification are available on the Wales DTP website. The application deadline is 31 August.

Careers for Postgraduate Researchers: Life Beyond Academia

In June, the Wales DTP held an online training session on Careers for Postgraduate Researchers, highlighting some of the post-PhD career options open to social science researchers.  The session focused on options available beyond the world of academia, and included talks from former DTP students about their own career paths, and a talk from a careers advisor on routes to consider.

To view a recording of the session, visit the online materials pages of the Wales DTP website.

Wales DTP / CAST Internship Opportunity

The deadline to apply for an internship opportunity with the Centre for Climate Change and Social Transformations (CAST) has been extended to noon on 9 September.  The internship will include working on a project which explores preferred visions of low-carbon societies, and/or a project which aims to co-design and deliver interventions to achieve emission reductions and wider sustainability benefits in collaboration with organisations such as the Welsh Government, Cardiff Council, and Anglian Water.  The internship is open to any ESRC Wales DTP funded student (except those within 3 months of the start or end of their studentship) and will commence in autumn 2022 for a period of 3 months (full-time or the part-time equivalent).  For a full project description and application details, visit the Wales DTP website.

Wales DTP Collaborative Awards: An information session for supervisors

Are you interested in collaborating with an external organisation on a research project to be undertaken by a fully-funded PhD student?  The Wales DTP is running an information session for potential supervisors on the benefits of collaborative studentships and how to put forward a proposal for a collaborative award.  The one-hour session takes place online on 6 September.  For further information and registration, visit Eventbrite.

New Data in CLOSER Discovery

Researchers can now search and explore new data in CLOSER Discovery - the UK's most detailed search engine for longitudinal population studies - with the addition of over 12,000 new variables.  This latest update adds over 3,500 variables from the Wirral Child Health and Development Study (WCHADS) and over 4,000 variables from the 1958 and 1970 British birth cohort studies to the search platform.  The additional WCHADS metadata means that CLOSER Discovery now contains data and questionnaire metadata from the first nine data sweeps of the study.  Read more about the study, recent findings and COVID-19 response in the latest CLOSER blog.

Standing up for Science: How to Make your Voice Heard in Public Debates about Science

Applications are open for the workshop 'Standing up for Science: how to make your voice heard in public debates about science', which takes place at Heriot-Watt University on 16 September.  The event is free for STEM and social science early career researchers, and gives an opportunity to meet researchers who have engaged with the media, learn from respected science journalists, find out how researchers can inform policymakers, and learn how to involve the public in communicating research. The applications deadline is 15 August.  For further information and registration visit the event webpage.
