Controversial artwork to be removed from Orillia Opera House

Our very own Administrative Director has been featured in this Simcoe.com article where she requests that a carved and painted pole by Jimi McKee and Wayne Hill labelled “Totem Pole” be removed from the Orillia Opera House prior to the Contact ONtour event.

"The totem says to the public that Orillia does not recognize its oppressive actions, nor takes responsibility for making its spaces inclusive, welcoming and safe for Indigenous Peoples,” said Dr. Terri-Lynn Brennan, administrative director of Ontario Presents.

ArtsEngage: Grants for Community Engagement Projects

ArtsEngage 2022 Call for Applicants: Engagement grants for community presenters. Deadline: September 16th, 2022. Funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage.

Ontario Presents is excited to be partnering once again with the Department of Canadian Heritage to offer a limited number of $6,000 grants to presenters seeking to partner with local artists to co-create opportunities for engagement and participation in rural and remote communities across Ontario. 100% of these funds will go towards covering artist fees, allowing presenters and artists to prioritize project development and prepare a final report.

We are looking for project proposals that cater to the unique needs of the local community and culminate in a public event that connects professional artists and community participants as co-creators in an artist-led creative process.

Additionally, selected applicants can expect to play a role in the ArtsEngage Learning Community and participate in virtual meetings with fellow specialists and program participants to discuss, learn and share.

Applications are open to any not-for-profit presenter (volunteer or professional) based in rural or remote communities in Ontario. Applicants do not need to be members of Ontario Presents, nor must they be venue-based. Priority will be given to presenters and artists who identify as Indigenous, Black, or People of Colour, artists and presenters with disabilities, Deaf artists and presenters, and rural/remote communities.

Interested applicants are invited to submit an application through our online form. For further inquiries, please email Deb at deborah@ontariopresents.caApplications are due by 5pm on Monday, September 19th, 2022.

Martin, You Will Be Missed.

On the passing of Martin Arsenau, Executive Director of Réseau Ontario. OP sends our deepest condolences to Martin's family and loved ones on this unimaginable loss. We also send our hearts and support to the team, members, and partners at Réseau Ontario and the Franco-Ontario community.

The global artistic world just lost a trailblazer. We are laying tobacco and dimming the lights.

Our hearts and minds are also thinking about those that have been tragically affected by the violence this past week in Saskatchewan, on James Smith Cree First Nation and surrounding area.  Tobacco is laid, and sweetgrass is burning.

Ontario Presents is a performing arts community of presenters, artists, agents, and producers. Our mission is to foster effective working relationships among artists, agents, producers, and presenters in their mutual endeavours to stage great performing arts experiences that open citizen’s minds and hearts to the world and the peoples around them.

Ontario Presents honours past, present and future Indigenous Peoples as the original  stewards and caretakers of the lands we present, showcase, and engage upon. Recognizing embedded colonial structures in the performing arts sector, including ways of thinking and knowing, inspires our ongoing responsibility to decolonize our work practices, to remain committed to Indigenous resurgence and reclamation, as well as platform the stories of Black, People of Colour, Deaf/Disabled and LGBT2Q+ voices across the province.
