August Newsletter

Wow--And just like that Tucson Regional Educators are off to start a new school year. A new school year is often a time for a fresh start and new ideas. With this, I've been thinking about joy as an important pedagogy for this year. The importance of this idea started with Juliana Urtubey's keynote at the TREC June Summit, where Juliana outlined the importance of a Joyous and Just Education for all students (here's a great podcast, InIt by Understood, that explains this important pedagogy). Yesterday, I was reading Rethinking Schools' Summer Issue: Teaching for Joy. The first article, Recommitting to the Joyful Classroom talks about the challenges educators will face this year, and suggested, "Instead of surrendering to despair, let us choose to create a different path [joy]." It goes on to state, "Our students need this pedagogy of joy, and we educators need it as well." I hope that as you start this school year you are able to create joy in your classrooms and schools, alongside learning.

In an effort to support joyous and just education in the region (and support educator resilience), TREC is providing the following professional learning opportunities to the region's educators:
  • TREC 2022-2023 Communities of Practice (CoPs). There is still time to join! You can learn more about these CoPs here, and sign up for a CoP here.
  • ATA new teacher support opportunities!
  • Fall Webinars
  • TREC Teacher Leaders, meet the new cohort and learn more about the Teacher Leader program here.
  • TREC presentations at your school or district! Interested in a TREC presentation?  Fill out this form and we will be in touch!

We hope you find ways to bring joy into your classrooms!

Best,
~Dr. Jen Kinser-Traut, TREC Director
