On Friday, August 5th, 2022, at approximately 1:53 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a call regarding a shooting at the Star Stop convenience store located at 6210 E Ben White Blvd. When officers arrived, they found Juan Pablo Morales-Rivera, lying on the ground, unresponsive with a gunshot wound. Morales-Rivera was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

The investigation revealed that the incident started as an argument between Morales-Rivera and a suspect, Jose Ehuric Hernandez. The altercation escalated to a fight during which Hernandez shot Morales-Rivera. After the shooting, Hernandez fled the scene in Morales-Rivera's vehicle.

Morales-Rivera's vehicle was abandoned when officers found it later that day on August 5th. An arrest warrant was issued for Hernandez for 1st Degree Murder.

A short time later, at approximately 9:48 pm, 9-1-1 operators received a call from a victim reporting a carjacking at the Trio Apartments located at the 2300 block of S Pleasant Valley Rd. When officers arrived, they noticed the suspect described by the victim in this incident matched Hernandez's description.

At approximately 9:59 pm, APD officers located the stolen vehicle from the Trio Apartments in the 7700 block of Ed Bluestein Blvd. Hernandez was found inside the car, and the APD SWAT Team took him into custody.
