Prior to class, select the verse (or short passage) you would like to look at with the kids. Begin the time by praying for God to speak to everyone through his Word. Have everyone find the verse in their own Bible, then read the verse out loud to the class. Ask the children to read the verse again for themselves, and to reflect on its content in silence for a couple minutes. Then, ask questions about the content of the verse. Write their answers where they can all see them. Questions may include: Does it say anything about God (the Father, Son, Holy Spirit)? Is it a promise, a command, or a warning? What can I learn about myself? What can I learn about God? If necessary, explain difficult words. Encourage the children to pray out loud, thanking God for the treasures they have discovered.
In order to help the children continue this practice on their own: Give each child a different verse – options include using postcards with verses that contain God's promises or writing the chosen verses on cards with a picture of a treasure on it. Give children time to think and ask questions if something is not clear to them. Encourage them, after reading and thinking about the verse, to try to write a short prayer based on it (you could give the children notebooks to write/paste the verse and prayer). Give them Bible verses regularly to encourage them to meditate on God's Word at home.
