AUGUST 2022 NEWSLETTER

Dear Friends,

We hope you are enjoying these hot summer months and managed to get along to one of our recent celebratory events. Summer at Andover Trees so far has been filled with music, art, woodwork, exhibitions and of course, nature.

At the end of July our youth team embarked on the first ever Andover Trees Expedition to Costa Rica! They have been exchanging information with their counterparts from the Corcovado Foundation since spring 2020, and now they got the chance to visit them in real life and experience amazing Costa Rican culture and wildlife - what an adventure!

This coming month you can see us around at various town events, including Four Fun Fridays (12th Aug) and the Andover Summer Fayre (27th Aug), plus we have our Saturday volunteering session this coming weekend the 13th August.
In September we are holding our Annual 'Walks & Talks with AGM' event - Saturday, 10th September - and hosting Jane Goodall's International Peace Day procession for the UK - Wednesday 21st September. 2 important events on the ATU calendar so make sure you save those dates!

Our wildlife survey project, Nature in Harmony, continues with weekly surveys and an upcoming Bioblitz event and Bat Walk event. Plus our regular Monday workdays are continuing as ever.

Read ahead for all of that and more, and remember we are always looking for new volunteers to lend a hand - please don't hesitate to get in touch!

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING SATURDAY 10TH SEPTEMBER

Join us for a guided walk in Harmony Woods, followed by presentations by our youth team (including stories from their recent expedition to Costa Rica!) & our Annual General Meeting.

If you can help set up please arrive at 9am (we will direct you to either the hall or the woods). If you would like to stay for lunch it is essential that you book your place.

If you have volunteered with us in the past year you have a constitutional right to vote in the AGM. Moreover, if there is an item you would like to include for discussion at the AGM, please let us know by the end of this month.

UPCOMING EVENTS

FOUR FUN FRIDAYS #NATUREWEEK

Come and say hi! 11am - 3pm

We will be on Andover high-street on Friday, 12th August for week 2 of #fourfunfridays . Stop by our stall to do some potting up of wildflowers ready for planting in Harmony Woods and in Hedge End Orchard later this autumn. We will also have some nature themed craft activities :)

SATURDAY VOLUNTEERING DAY

13th August 10am - 12pm

Practical woodland management tasks - make sure you come prepared for the heat! Sun cream, water, sun hat.
No afternoon session this month due to extreme heat warning.

BIOBLITZ

Saturday September 17th 10 am - 12pm
Join us for a Bioblitz - where we will attempt to record all the living species within Harmony Woods in two hours.

Limited number of spaces available, suited to all ages and abilities!

All equipment will be provided and our findings will contribute to the Nature in Harmony 2022 report.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE

Once again, Andover Trees United will be hosting this year’s main UK event for the UN's International Day of Peace with a procession in Harmony Woods on Wednesday, 21st September.

Put the date in your diary and stay tuned for further details.

BAT WALK

Saturday September 24th (at dusk - time tbc)

Join us for a Bat Walk in Harmony Woods!

Free event. Spaces limited so sign up is essential, suited to all ages and abilities!

A great way to spend the evening, and our findings will contribute to the Nature in Harmony 2022 report.

WILDLIFE SURVEY ASSISTANTS REQUIRED

Residents of Andover and the surrounding areas are invited to assist our Ecology Intern in wildlife data collection in Harmony Woods. This involved surveying for birds, butterflies, wildflowers and pollinators. Weekdays. No experience is necessary.

HELPING HANDS - VOLUNTEER WORKDAYS

Our regular Monday workdays and community workdays are ongoing and you can catch up on all the activity via our regular blog which charts our practical activity at the woods, the allotment, school gardens & out and about in the community.
