Rham's Captain's Log

Out With The Old, sort of...

Interesting week. Been “in the studio” as they say. In the studio in my case referring to behind the screen and behind the mic, -simultaneously … together-like, at the same time, hand in hand, trying to produce something…. funny? Memorable? Or, just getting stuff off my chest, or whatever the case may be, this week was apparently the week to do just that. I’ve had a recent influx, a surge of sorts, of creativity and as a result, I’ve really been putting the pen to the paper on an organized, real-life, carefully structured stand-up comedy routine to perform in front of a live non-studio audience, and for whatever reason, lots of stars aligned this week and some really great stuff has been coming out from behind those studio walls. (Turns out they call that a “skull.”) I’m just about finished. I am calling it a short set, 30 minutes or less, because really, 30 minutes is plenty of time for almost everything in life (we’ll explore more on that one later), and when I’m done with what I have prepared, I’m going to set out to practice it, but here’s the deal, I’m going to “practice” it out of town, where no one knows me or has heard of me or has even seen my face before, then I’m going to do it again and again and again.

I want straight up STRANGERS to laugh at me, with me, whatever, OR maybe not laugh at all, which aligns perfectly with the purge. The purge here referring to me accessing and reviewing old content up in my head-brain area, then throwing it out there, methodic-like, and seeing what sticks, taking notes, adjustingaccordingly, ridding the rubbish, beefing up the real meat, and finally starting to put to rest this “book” I’ve been writing for 42 years! But there ain’t no rest for the wicked and it’ll never end, well, until I end and I don’t anticipate that coming anytime soon, so, it’s just a good feeling to know that there’s plenty to keep me busy and you entertained….or is there?

To give you a better understanding as to what I’m going through here, a good chunk of the content that I found is from 15 + years back. Now, think about that. And, let’s look at the numbers. I was younger then. Fifteen + years younger in fact. My brain was still developing. This is true. And while that noggin of mine was in a state of learning and growing and what-not, I aggressively (sometimes carelessly) moved forward with sudden random (or “rhamdom”) thoughts that seemed to be coming from that thing sitting on top of my shoulders, and folks, up until that point, I just thought that sucker was there to store helmets and caps and what-not, and every month or so, a ‘dew chop or chizzle and really, that was about it. It’s really there for balance more than anything else. But turns out that’s simply not the case. Apparently, it stores stuff. Lots of stuff. Lots of important stuff, and you wouldn’t believe what I found up there (or maybe some of you would), rummaging through old notes (digital and hard copies) and listening to songs and beats and jingles…. fascinating. But then I started putting things together, and decipherin’, and re-writin’, and re-thinkin’, and it turns out there just might be some really good stuff here, so why not have a little fun? (And you know me and fun!)  “But the PURGE, Rham. You forgot about the PURGE.” Ah yes the purge. Learning that some of that stuff 15+ years ago not only ain’t funny, but also tends to lean to the side of inappropriate, just slightly, and at the age of 40ish, admitting that stuff ain’t funny, allows me to purge it, delete it, clear out some cache, defrag and stuff then BAM! Rham as new…

So, soon, something is coming. Actually it’s here. Picked it up from the airport just a few nights ago. Question is, will it produce a laugh or a giggle, perhaps a chuckle or grin? Only time will tell, and there is no timeline for this line of creative purging, folks. But I’m excited to free up a little space and fill it with other adventurous things, and when looking for adventurous things, I always turn to ….
