Searching for Bylaws Aficionados
At the Branch Planning meeting, Nell Matthews volunteered to chair a Branch Bylaws update committee. She is looking for committee members:
Do you like to read and edit documents? Are you a teacher, writer, or lover of minutia? Then volunteer for the bylaws update for AAUW Little Rock Branch. Any time national updates their bylaws, we need to add in the required wording to ours. It is a great time to look at what we say we do and compare to what we actually do and adjust our bylaws to match. Finally, it gives us the opportunity to fix little things that have been bothering us. Click here to contact Nell Matthews to volunteer. I will send the documents to you and then we can get together with Zoom and Google Docs and discuss any changes, so you can do this while wearing your house shoes. Contact me by August 31.

Next Meeting will be...
Monday, September 19, 6 p.m.
Fletcher Library, 823 N. Buchanan, Little Rock
Topic: Poll Working and Watching 101
Did you know August 16th is Poll Worker Recruitment Day?
Poll workers are the backbone of the election system, and we wouldn’t have safe and smooth elections without them. Unfortunately, during the 2020 cycle, we saw a huge reduction in workers at the poll, and that trend is continuing on during the midterms.
Poll workers help make sure our democracy is safe, and our elections are fair.
Poll workers support early voting locations, ensure technology functions, and help minimize long lines and delays at polling places on Election Day. Because the number of poll workers at a polling place impacts whether a polling place opens on Election Day, poll worker shortages can lead to long lines and voter disenfranchisement, especially in communities of color and low income communities.
APPLY TO BE A POLL WORKER!
What better way to empower voters and defend democracy?
- Apply by September 15 to be part of the democratic process of voting on November 8
- Free training
- No experience necessary
- Your time commitment: 2 hours for training and 14 hours on Election Day
- You choose to be paid or volunteer
- Visit the Pulaski County Election Commission website to learn more and apply.

WRITING TO VOTERS - Indivisible
Indivisible LRCA VIP Voter Project is writing postcards to approximately 5,000 voters over the summer and into the fall. These postcards are intended to get voters to the polls by providing voter registration and voting assistance as well as candidate and issue information. Indivisible provides "Volunteer Packets" with scripts and 20 postcards. For more information and to sign up, click here.
A similar effort in 2020 mobilized young voters 15 percentage points higher than young voters district-wide.

Celebrating 100 Years
1922 - 2022
Dr. Diana Glaze
Honorary Lifetime Member
AAUW Little Rock, Inc.
I am a 59-year member of AAUW and a 53-year member of the LR branch. I came here in 1970 and immediately joined the LR branch of AAUW because I heard of the wonderful women in it.
In 1976, we had a local issue. The City of Little Rock Board of Directors chose their own mayor. A member nominated a woman. It was not seconded because one board member said LR was not ready for a woman mayor. AAUW was the only organization to challenge this remark. At the next board meeting. Eleanor Reed and I composed a speech that Jeanne Whitesell, our current AAUW LR president, read to the city directors. The woman who made the speech against a woman mayor was defeated in the next election and Lottie Shackleford was elected as mayor.
AAUW has always been the voice of Little Rock. We will always take on a challenge and advocate for everyone’s rights from minorities to women.

On Aug 26 1920, the Nineteenth Amendment was certified as part of our Constitution, assuring that 'the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied..."
In 1971, Representative Bella Abzug championed a bill in the U.S. Congress to designate Aug 26 as "Women's Equality Day" commemorating the importance of the women’s suffrage movement and the work to secure and expand equal rights today.
