The time has come for the trials to show their true summer colors! While much of the country is experiencing record-breaking heat, in Georgia the season has stayed mostly true to character – hot and humid. We have been blessed with some cooler mornings, perfect for weeding and watering, and the garden is still packed with colorful beds, baskets, and containers. Special thanks to Western Pulp for providing our biodegradable molded fiber baskets! These baskets promote good airflow, drainage, and keep our annuals looking healthy and beautiful all season long. We are excited to welcome back our students and campus community and we are excited to show you what is blooming right now in the UGA Trial Garden!

Did you know we were featured on the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences' new podcast, Cultivating Curiosity? Listen now for an in-depth look at what goes on behind the scenes at the Trial Gardens!

If you know of anyone interested in working as an intern with the gardens, please share this video with them!
Crape Myrtle Black Diamond™ ‘Pavé Pink’ by J. Berry Nursery

This is a new take on a classic crape! The branches flow gently over a container or hillside creating a dramatic effect. Hoping to see more of these dreamy, compact, dwarf-sized trees.
Echinacea Artisan™ Series by Kieft Seed

Sometimes it is too hard to pick just one! The Artisan™ series was grown from seed and has bloomed quite uniformly at the peak of the season! All three colors – ‘Yellow Ombre’, ‘Soft Orange’, and ‘Red Ombre’ – come together to form a rainbow of color in the sunniest and hottest beds in the garden.
Gerbera Garvinea® ‘Sweet Sparkle’ by HilverdaFlorist

This is the second appearance of a Garvinea® Gerbera this year. This is not typically a plant that appears in most regional landscapes due to its finicky reputation, but we have had unbelievable success with this series!
Ipomoea Sweet Caroline Upside™ 'Key Lime' by Proven Winners

We are excited to show off the new sweet potato vine reaching for the sky! The Upside vines have climbed to new heights, filling their trellis with giant lime green leaves swirling in the breeze!
Lantana Gem™ ‘Compact Orange Fire’ by Danziger

We love a plant that is true to its name in every way. The Gem™ series has given us so many beautiful plants with almost crystalline shapes and geometry. Perfectly placed red and orange shades on a sturdy, well-branched plant structure.
Penstemon ‘Flock of Flamingos’ by TerraNova

A pretty penstemon might belong on the list in June, but here we are in August, and these big, lovely bells are still going strong! Taller and fuller than any other, we are pleasantly surprised.
Petunia EXP F1 Trilogy ‘Salmon Morn’ (gen 2) by American Takii

Picture a morning sunrise with sweet pink clouds and bright white light shining through – this petunia is putting on quite a show!
Lobelia Early Springs™ ‘Blue’ by Ball FloraPlant

Lobelia is also better known as a cool-weather flower in Georgia. It is always interesting to see how they fare under the heat, and this one gets the prize! Hold on little guys – just one more month to go until temperatures start to fall again and you get a little relief from the heat!
Trixi® ‘Enchanted Evening’ by Selecta One

Combination planters are a beautiful way to achieve a professional garden design in your own backyard. Our volunteer, Wanda, has enjoyed this harmonic blend of textures and colors all summer long, and it is one of our favorites as well!
Scaevola Surdiva® ‘Blue Violet’ by Suntory

Planted both in clay soil beds and in hanging baskets, this series has endured. We have had no issues with wilting or over-watering in either location. This is truly a SouthEastern beauty!
