Stained Glass Windows Restoration Celebration Planned at Camp Hancock State Historic Site

BISMARCK, N.D. – On Sept. 3 from 1 to 3 p.m., the public is invited to join in celebrating the restoration of the stained glass windows in the Church of the Bread of Life at Camp Hancock State Historic Site, located at 101 E. Main Ave. in Bismarck. The State Historical Society of North Dakota, with support from the Bismarck Historical Society, initiated the process of restoring the windows in 2019. The project was completed this summer.

The schedule for the day follows. All times are approximate.

  • 1 p.m. Welcome by Bismarck Historical Society
  • 1:20 p.m. Blessing of the windows with the Rev. Hal Weidman, rector of St. George’s Episcopal Memorial Church
  • 1:30 p.m. "History of the Episcopal Church in Bismarck" by Tom Tudor
  • Open time to enjoy the windows, socialize, and explore the site
  • 2:20 p.m. "A Few Words From Linda Slaughter" by Sarah Fox
  • 2:30 p.m. St. George’s Episcopal Memorial Church Choir performance

The Church of the Bread of Life was completed in 1881. Later renamed St. George's Episcopalian Church, it served the Episcopalian community in Bismarck until 1949 when the parish built a new church. The old church found use as the Calnan Funeral Home until the early 1960s when it was sold to the First Presbyterian Church of Bismarck, which soon donated it to the State Historical Society. In 1965, the building was moved to Camp Hancock for preservation, and the broken stained glass windows were removed and placed in storage.
