Dear Parents, Caregivers & Friends of the College

Kia ora koutou katoa nga whanau o te kura

It is incredible to think that we have already completed 4 weeks of Term 3! Our focus and energy is very much on students completing the year well, both inside and outside the classroom. Senior boys have 8 weeks until their NCEA exams and will be finishing their internal assessments. Juniors have 10 weeks until their end of year assessments.

For those young men competing in winter tournament week scheduled for week 6 (29th August-2nd September) this will be an opportunity for them to pull together their training and development throughout the season and test themselves against some of the best young men their age in New Zealand.

In order for students to make the most of the remainder of this year, they need to prioritise their learning both inside and outside the classroom and in doing so, make a commitment to ACE it! (A)ttendance,(C)ompletion and (E)ffort. If boys can apply these 3 simple steps they will give themselves the very best opportunity to achieve what they are capable of achieving.

Attendance

Currently we are tracking at 82% attendance for this term. 80% attendance still means a student is missing 1 day per week, 10 days per term, 40 days per year. That equates to 8 weeks of teaching and learning time missed per year.

We appreciate that we have had to navigate through the post COVID era but it is really important that we work together to give our young men every chance of achieving what they are capable of. This starts with attending school regularly.

Completion

Here is a snapshot of how our students are currently tracking towards completing their NCEA internal assessments. We can compare this with last year.

The Associate Minister of Education announced changes to NCEA that recognise the impact student and teacher absences, due to COVID-19 and other winter illnesses have had on teaching, learning and assessment this year. In 2022, students will be entitled to 1 Learning Recognition Credit (LRC) for every 5 credits earned through assessment, up to a maximum of:

To receive a Certificate Endorsement, students will need 46 credits at Merit or Excellence level, instead of the usual 50. To be awarded University Entrance, students will need 14 credits in each of two UE Approved Subjects, and 12 credits in a third UE Approved Subject (they will also need to attain NCEA Level 3 and meet the regular literacy and numeracy requirements).

Effort

100% effort ensures the very best outcomes.

At TBC our expectation is that students put 100% effort into their work both inside and outside the classroom. This means removing distractions. One of the greatest distractions for our young men in recent times is their cell phone. The school has clear policies around cell phone usage at school and this includes them not being used in class to distract from their learning.

We are revisiting this focus over the next few weeks and we ask that parents/caregivers discuss this with their sons and remind them of their responsibility to ‘manage’ themselves and not let their phones be a distraction to their learning. Time is of the essence and every moment of learning will count toward their overall outcomes.

Enjoy our second newsletter of the term and the range of opportunities our young men are engaged in.

TBC MOBILE PHONE POLICY
This week we have reminded the students of the school policy in regards to Mobile Phones.

POLICY

If a student chooses to bring a mobile phone to school, it is their responsibility if the mobile phone is lost, stolen or damaged.

Procedures

1. A school phone is provided for local calls and if an urgent cell phone or toll call needs to be made during the school day this can be organised through one of the Deputy Principals.

2. If a student has a mobile phone at school, for use after school to organise a pick up time with caregivers or to confirm work commitments, etc. then it should be left switched off and concealed in his bag, or be handed in to the office where it can be picked up again at the end of the day once they have completed their consequence at lunchtime.

3. Any student with a visible mobile phone in class, or who uses a cell phone in class, will have it confiscated until the end of the day. In a test or exam situation, the student will receive a zero mark. Confiscated phones are to be handed to the Assistant Principal (Student Management).

4. Any student using their phone to photograph or video a staff member or another student without their permission will be sent to the Assistant Principal (Student Management) immediately. After an investigation into such an incident, disciplinary action may result.

ENROLMENTS FOR 2023
Enrolments for 2023 are now open online, go to www.tbc.school.nz, click on enrol and follow the instructions provided.  Both in zone enrolments and out of zone enrolment applications are completed online.
Out of zone applications for 2023 close on Monday 5th September.
LEARNING RECOGNITION CREDITS (LRCs)
The Secretary for Education has made the following changes to NCEA that recognise the impact student and teacher absences due to COVID-19 and other winter illnesses have had on teaching, learning and assessment this year.

In 2022, students will be entitled to 1 Learning Recognition Credit (LRC) for every 5 credits earned through assessment, up to a maximum of:
  • NCEA Level 1 - 10 LRCs
  • NCEA Level 2 - 8 LRCs
  • NCEA Level 3 - 8 LRCs
To receive a Certificate Endorsement, students will need 46 credits at Merit or Excellence level, instead of the usual 50.

To be awarded University Entrance, students will need 14 credits in each of two UE Approved Subjects, and 12 credits in a third UE Approved Subject (they will also need to attain NCEA Level 3 and meet the regular literacy and numeracy requirements).

The submission dates for some externally assessed portfolios have also been moved back one week - this provides some relief but avoids overlap with end of year examinations. This will apply to the following subjects:
  • Technology (NCEA Levels 1-3 and NZ Scholarship)
  • Design and Visual Communication (NCEA Levels 1-3 and NZ Scholarship)
  • Music (NZ Scholarship)
  • Health and Physical Education (NZ Scholarship)
The dates for Visual Arts and the Digital Technologies Common Assessment Task (DCAT) are not changing.

AGRICULTURE / HORTICULTURE

AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE

On Tuesday 16 August, the Year 12 agricultural students visited a deer farm near Rotorua in preparation for their external examination in November. The farmers have been breeding deer for velvet for over 40 years and the velvet is harvested as a food product for sale in health and sports medicine. Stags preferred for velvet are selected with antlers that have width and density - not height and number of points which are required for trophy hunting.

Last year they produced nearly 2 tonnes of velvet.

Pictured:

Students then visited a South Suffolk stud farm where they were able to condition-check 3 year old rams. Ian and Georgina Lawrence (Lawrence Partners) breed South Suffolk sheep near Mamaku. The South Suffolk is actually a New Zealand breed of sheep.  Rams are purchased as terminal sires due to their highly developed leg muscles but also have narrow shoulders that result in ease of birthing when lambs are born.

VISIT TO MASSEY UNIVERSITY

In late June, the Year 13 Agricultural and Horticultural Science class visited Massey University campus in Palmerston North.  Massey University financially supported this trip and paid for the student's transport, accommodation and meals with the aim of the visit to learn about university life ahead of time and to support their learning at level 3.

Pictured: On route to Massey, the students visited a beef finishing farm near Rotorua and the Manawatu AFFCO meat plant processing bovine.

At Massey University, students visited the refrigeration and post-harvest research facility, MAF Digital laboratory working on robotics, Massey University greenhouse and orchard, AgResearch and Grasslands and the Massey University farm looking at a sheep drainage trial.

Students learnt about the agricultural and horticultural science degrees, scholarships and ongoing support for students.  Such is the shortage of degree-qualified agricultural and horticultrual students, nearly all gain a provisional job offer before they finish their final year at Massey.

HORTICULTURAL SCIENCE

On Monday 15 August, the Year 12 horticultural students visited a geothermally heated glasshouse near Rotorua in preparation for their external examination in November. The company produces cut flowers for the New Zealand local market. The plants are tissue propagated in India and then flown to New Zealand for growing on before being sent to the glasshouse.

Pictured:

The students then visited a Seeka avocado orchard near Te Puke. The orchard has trials of new avocado varieties.  The unique rootstock results in a tree that is only 20% the height of standard varieties.  Avocado fruit can then be picked from the ground rather than needing a cherry picker.

This year Food bank has identified the following items as being on their wish list:

REQUESTS FOR HOLIDAYS
DURING TERM TIME
I am concerned with the number of requests I receive from parents for time off for their sons during the school term to travel domestically or internationally for holidays.

I understand the educational value of travel but remind parents to be mindful of the impact time away from the classroom can have on your son's academic achievement.

Of particular concern is when this absence occurs at the same time NCEA internal assessments are planned, as this can have a significant effect on your son's NCEA results.

Ministry of Education regulations only allow me to give permission for absence from school due to illness or family bereavement and advise that all trips / holidays should be taken during official school holiday periods.

I would ask that all requests for leave are sent to me at principal@tbc.school.nz

My preference is for all leave of this nature to occur during the school holidays.  Leave from school for holiday travel that is taken outside of school holiday periods will be recorded as "explained but unjustified".

Thank you for your assistance with this.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
School Health Service

The school nurses this year are Vicki (Mon-Thurs) and Stephanie (Thurs - Fri) who are fully registered nurses funded by the Western BOP Primary Health Organisation. The clinic is located down by the gym and there is no cost for the youth health services. This is in addition to the sickbay team at the main office with whom the nurses work closely, to provide best care to the boys at TBC.  There is also a GP who does a short clinic each Monday for those who may face barriers to accessing their own GP.

In an attempt to support our young men with any challenges and to identify any barriers to learning at an early stage, health assessments may be done in Year 9 (or other years if required) and include a discussion around; physical health, growth and development, hearing, vision, activities, eating and weight, school and home, drugs and alcohol, sexuality, mood and safety (HEADDSS).

If you would like more information or for your son
