Pierce Pond Fish Ladder

Join the Blue Hill Heritage Trust, the Open Air Arts Initiative and the Penobscot Alewife Committee in creating a 'habitat sculpture' that will offer shelter for wildlife, while smothering the invasive Bishop's Weed that threatens to overtake the little stream-side meadow. Together we will create a form inspired by the flow of the stream, using materials found on site and thinking about relationships between the land and water. We will also talk about the idea of community tended spaces, and how to care for our shared resources around the Bagaduce watershed.

A flurry of Rudbekia hirta (Black eyed Susan) grows out of the gravel along the Pierce Pond Fish ladder. There is a wonderful array of native plants growing at the site, offering food and shelter to pollinators and other wildlife.

COLLABORATE to create field sculpture
Working together using natural materials found on-site, we will make a form that may be inhabited by local wildlife. The form will be inspired by the flow of the water and we will talk about approaches of integrating creative forms for wildlife shelter at home, including working it into smaller, more urban spaces.
LEARN how to oust invasive bishop’s weed
....using NO CHEMICALS
The meadow has an explosion of the highly invasive Bishop's weed. It will take time and diligence to get rid of it. We will cover methods of how to restore the site and look at why it is important to keep invasive species in check if we want to maintain a functioning ecology.
EXPLORE community tended spaces
Alewives are a keystone species that are again flourishing because of the opened stream passage, essential for their migration and reproduction. They offer an important economic component to local fisheries by being used as a bait fish by lobstermen. This site also offers public access to the beautiful Pierce's Pond with a boatramp and outdoor classroom/picnic area. We will be exploring how to tend this open access space over the long term as a community.
