What's the Elders Council doing?
This is a Last Call: What would an age-friendly world look like to you?
Celebrating Age will be holding events on:
Tuesday 16th, Wednesday 17th, Thursday 18th and Friday 19th August 2022:
Morning sessions
10am-12.30pm, Holy Cross Church Hall, 16 Whittington Grove, Fenham
Afternoon sessions
2.00 – 4.30 pm, Tree Top Village, Walker Road, Walker.
Workshops are free to attend and all are welcome.
These sessions involve storytelling and creative writing activities with over 50s from across Newcastle.
Celebrating Age aims to promote a positive image of ageing; challenging outdated negative preconceptions, and actively engage older people in their local communities.
Stories and special insights gathered as part of our co-creation process with participants will be shared as part of celebratory public performances in Newcastle City to celebrate International Day for Older Persons as part of imAGE Festival during October 2022.
Celebrating Age has been commissioned by The Elders Council of Newcastle and is being delivered in partnership with Unfolding Theatre. It is funded by The National Lottery Awards for All England

Older Voices Radio Programme

Politics and Power will be the topic for this broadcast with guests from Extinction Rebellion, the Electoral Reform Society and Shelter.

Gannin’ Alang the Wall: The Romans went this way
This film follows the route of Hadrian’s Wall as it passes through Newcastle, starting at the beginning of the Wall at the fort of Segedunum a short distance east of the city boundary and ending at Heddon just beyond the western boundary.
The Hadrian's Wall National Path passes through Newcastle on its way from Bowness on Solway to Wallsend. For most of the route it follows the River Tyne along pleasant riverside paths. But did you know that at no point does the official path touch the actual route of the Wall through the city? With the help of people from communities living along the real route, this film shows where the Wall really went

If you enjoy walking and would like to meet new friends why not join the group on the 1st and 2nd Tuesday of each month 11 - 3.30 pm (next walk is 6th September)

There is so much to see and do during this 10 day period, why not plan your visit using your concessionary pass?
Many events are within walking distance if you are able to do this.
Some are very popular so, if you can, check the website out below and book your place at the nearest event as soon as possible.
At times funny, at times poignant, and always deeply moving, #TheseAreOurTreasures features over 80 precious objects belonging to people of the North East.
The project was developed by artist Ruth Ewan in response to the #LindisfarneGospels going on display in autumn 2022.

The charity, CleanupUK, have spent the last fifteen years supporting local communities to tackle the litter problem where they live. Over 350 litter-picking groups have been set up and over 16,000 people engaged to help tackle litter locally.
In the next two months, they will beestablishing litter-picking hubs across Newcastle and are looking for charities or organisations to become Community Partners and help bring people together through litter-picking.
It would be good to tie this great activity in to Newcastle City Council’s up-and-coming campaign ‘Love where you live’ which will aim to bring neighbours and communities together across the city to tackle littering.
Perhaps your organisation might like to explore becoming a litter-picking hub?
They will help you access litter-picking equipment that can be used by local people.

Improving Carers experience of Hospital Discharge
Could your organisation assist us in recruiting unpaid carers and carer support staff to take part in an exciting and worthwhile piece of research this summer/autumn?
Earlier this year VONNE commissioned a team of researchers from local Universities through the AskFuse network to gain understanding of the way unpaid carers in the North East and Yorkshire are supported when the person they care for is being discharged from hospital. Nationally,
Carers UK published a report in September 2021 highlighting the poor experiences that carers have reported.
We want to understand carers experiences in our local area through obtaining feedback from carers themselves, carers support organisations and local Healthwatch teams.
The research team will also speak to a sample of NHS acute hospital Trusts and unpaid carers from across the region, asking them what they think the issues are, and what actions are required to improve this experience for carers.
The outcome of the work will be a good practice guide that can be used in every hospital across our region, which sets out a carer led, evidence-based approach to the actions that should be taken to improve the experience for our unpaid carers.

£30 Food Voucher from Iceland
Iceland have teamed up with the Rothesay Foundation to provide vouchers, to support older people in the UK who are living in poverty and rely on only the State pension and benefits.
If you qualify for this, you can apply for a voucher as the 'Summer Cheer' campaign is rolled out.
The telephone hotline is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday but vouchers are limited, and you will need to confirm that they are accepted in your local Iceland shop

What do Astronauts have in common with older people?
Well of course we all get older, but the answer is muscle loss.
Apparently it has been noticed that astronauts in space lose their muscle mass and strength at an accelerated rate compared with older people on earth.
This has triggered a UK Space Agency supported research programme by Liverpool University . The University will be sending laboratory grown muscle cells up and down to the International Space Station (ISS) to carry out a series of experiments in microgravity effect on muscle cells.
It is hoped that research will lead to a better understanding of exactly why human muscle strength declines. The further hope is that this will give the lead on how to counteract loss of muscle strength, not only for astronauts , but for older people in general.
For the moment, however, it must be tough for older astronauts!
We have mentioned this before, if you have any £20 or £50 paper banknotes then you will not be able to use them in shops after 30th September 2022.
You will only be able to swap them for face value at the Bank of England after that date. Check your pockets or old purse, just in case.
