Engaging volunteers to make an impact
on food insecurity in your community.

Omar Khan began his volunteer commitment with the Food Bank in the fall of 2021. He initially assisted with building food boxes at the Hampden distribution center. As the volunteer team learned more about him, including his interests and skills, Omar was asked to assist with inventory management. Betsy Sullivan moved to Maine two years ago with the desire to get involved with her new community as a volunteer. She found Good Shepherd Food Bank’s website online, watched the volunteer video, and was inspired by Doug Boyce’s story. Betsy has served over 150 hours and has been recognized as an Apple Corps recipient. She is a key inspection and sorting team member and an essential instructor for new volunteers. Food Bank staff members truly appreciate Betsy’s time and dedication.

Warehouse associate Sharon Williams describes her as “a very sweet, determined, and hard-working woman with a servant’s heart.” Betsy enjoys the staff she works with as well. She shared, “Claire Begin and Sharon Williams are awesome - they keep things organized and moving, always happy to answer questions and patient in teaching new tasks.” Betsy believes her volunteer experience has taught her much about food insecurity and that food insecurity needs to be solved. She says, “…being part of getting food to people that need it is very rewarding, and a reminder of what to be grateful for. A bonus is that you get to work with great people.”

Welcome Bree! We're excited to announce a new member of the Volunteer Team. Brianna (Bree) Belair joined us on July 20 as a Volunteer Coordinator. She will be based out of the Food Bank's Hampden Distribution Center, and her focus will be assisting with volunteer recruitment, engagement, and recognition.

Bree earned her B.A. from the University of Maine with a dual major in Psychology and Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies. Previously she worked for the New Hampshire Bar Association and more recently served as the Volunteer Coordinator for Partners for Peace. Bree fell in love with Maine and now lives in Brewer with her partner, Ben. They have a menagerie of pets, including cats, a gerbil, and several guinea pigs. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, foraging, and gardening. Bree is looking forward to her new role at the Food Bank and meeting all the wonderful volunteers that serve with us daily.
Farm Fresh Rewards is a nutrition incentives program designed to stretch budgets and improve fresh food access for thousands of enrolled Mainers.

This is how it works. If paying with SNAP/EBT at any participating store, customers who spend $10 on local food receive a $5 voucher for local, food-producing seeds and seedlings, fresh, frozen, and dried local fruit and vegetable purchases. "Farm Fresh Rewards has helped increase the accessibility of local produce for SNAP and EBT users in our store and has been incredibly effective," said Joh Crane, General Manager of Portland Food Co-op.
