The Arts Newsletter

Wow! It's been a whole year!!
Since we opened our doors here at the Cary Saurage Community Arts Center, we’ve hosted 173 events for others, as well as our grand opening gala. Two resident dance companies and three visual artists call this place home, as does the Baton Rouge Symphony administrative team. Our four Artsplosion! Camps brought groups of K-5th graders into the center and to places throughout downtown Baton Rouge (field trips) – those groups included scholarship students from active military and veterans’ families. We’ve produced/hosted Try Arts Tuesdays, Louisiana Arts Summit and, of course, MPAC, as well as exhibiting the work of some 40 artsits in the Shall Gallery. Speaking of art, the building itself houses 93 pieces of art and counting – plus one rooftop mural– all of which celebrate Louisiana artists. Concerts in the Virginia and John Noland Black Box Studio have employed 53 artists and engineers, and hosted 71 podcasts, 6 commercials and 11 live streaming events.
Recently, we were visited by three Louisiana municipalities interested in replicating what we’ve created at the Cary Saurage Community Arts Center – an amazing facility would not have been possible without the tremendous support from the community. In particular a huge shoutout to arts patrons extraordinaire Cary Saurage, Virginia and John Noland, John Turner and Jerry Fischer, Shell Corp., Jan and Bill Grimes, Mary K. Davis, Patsy and the late Don Lyle, Ann and Paul Connelly, Ava and Cordell Hayman, Barbara and Brian Haymon, Kelly and Enrique Hurtado, Carole and Charlie Lamar, Cornelis and Karen Lewis, Teeta and Rolfe McCollister, Kevin and Winifred Reilly, Mary Ann Sternberg, Kim and Mike Wampold, Candy Wright and Michael Ramos, Baker Property Management & Commercial Real Estate, Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry, McMains Foundation, Phelps Dunbar and friends of the late Mary Frey Eaton and the late Derek Gordon.

Back to School
ACGBR (staffers Marie Flowers, Pam Bordelon & Claire Kitten) got to be part of the back-to-school madness last Saturday at the Baton Rouge Area Youth Network’s Back-to-School Bash at the Raising Cane’s River Center. Aside from getting some much-needed school supplies, attendees could visit booths manned by most every EBR public school and get info from I Care, Girl Scouts, Knock Knock Children’s Museum, Volunteers of America, Capital Area United Way, several health services and literacy groups and EVERYTHING you need to know about the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge. We were entertained by the several bands, dance squads and cheerleaders – you can check them out by clicking links below.
