Welcoming New Volunteers
August 12, 2022

Dear Stewards,

Earlier today I joined an impressive group of Wildfire Resilience Program student interns (photos above) from Santa Rosa Junior College along the Pool Ridge Trail in Austin Creek. Led by Scotty Lawyer, Stewards' Field Operations Manager, the volunteer crew navigated steep switchbacks with 16 foot redwood beams destined to replace footbridges lost during the Walbridge fire. They will be back soon to help with other fire-related projects. Please join me in thanking the interns and their Professor and Program Coordinator, Briana Boaz, for coordinating!

I am also delighted to announce three new Board Members! David Berman, Heather Rowe, and Laurie Prothro were recently nominated and confirmed to Stewards' Board of Directors. They each bring unique talents and experiences to our small but might nonprofit. Learn more about David, Heather, and Laurie on our website and read about our board leadership opportunities. We welcome their leadership and shared commitment to our mission.

Last week we bid farewell to our Conservation Corps North Bay - Sonoma County Youth Ecology Corps crew (photo below). Over four weeks they prepared Bullfrog Campground for campers, cleared roads and trails, and restored infrastructure damaged by fire. At the same time, they learned about and developed skills for careers in conservation through our partnership with California State Parks. Thank you!

Sincerely yours,

Justin Lindenberg
Executive Director

Eleven Volunteers assisted Scotty and Rachel with some much needed clean up around the wood processing area and some hazard tree removal along the Pool Ridge Trail. Four Volunteers lead by Tim Meyer headed up the Pool Ridge Trail to remove four trees that were blocking the trail. One tree was blocking the trail in three different locations. The rest of the Crew headed up to the wood processing area for a Basic Chainsaw Safety Class, weed whipping the tall grass to reduce the fuel load and bucking up logs for the splitter. Getting ready to process more firewood for the coastal campgrounds. Lunch was topped off with Cookies from Flora. - Rich Lawton, Stewards Volunteer Trail Crew Coordinator

Here’s some “after” shots after the Pool Ridge Trail tree removal job, then a few pics of the last hour or so of activities at the burn pile.
