VARIETY the Children's Charity - HISTORY

On 10 October 1927, a group of eleven men involved in show business set up a social club which they named the Variety Club.
On Christmas Eve 1928, a small baby was left on the steps of the Sheridan Square Film Theatre with a note reading:
"Please take care of my baby. Her name is Catherine. I can no longer take care of her. I have eight others. My husband is out of work. She was born on Thanksgiving Day. I have always heard of the goodness of show business people and pray to God that you will look after her. Signed, a heartbroken mother."
Since efforts to trace the mother failed, the members of the Variety Club named the child Catherine Variety Sheridan after the club and the theatre on the steps of which she was found and undertook to fund the child's living expenses and education. Later the club decided to raise funds for other disadvantaged children.
From this humble beginning was born “Variety”, the charity dedicated to helping underprivileged and disadvantaged children. Variety has become a global charity raising funds to improve the lives of children.

HBYC involvement

Some members of the Hobsons Bay Yacht Club decided to accept the challenge to raise funds for Variety by taking part in the Variety Bash, an annual car rally whereby participants cruise the back roads and tracks of Australia. To add spice, cars and teams adopt a theme. Thus was created the “Willy Buccaneers”.

Thanks to Covid the Bash had to be cancelled the past two years but finally this year we're DOIN' IT !!!!

James Walshe and his merry band of buccaneers  Chris Williamson, Maureen Dickins, Colin Bourke, Phillip Moroghan, Margot Roulston will hit the road next Tuesday 16th August leaving from the Melbourne Showgrounds and all Hobbos are welcome to come and cheer us off (make sure we really go) with official proceedings & Grant Presentations from 8:30am and Bash cars leaving from approximately 9:15am.

We will be 11 days on the road travelling thru Australia's Red Centre getting hot and dusty but hopefully not lost while Melbourne continues to freeze no doubt.
Our destination is Cairns via Birdsville Track (beers at the pub are banned in case we get Covid) and then we will be fast tracking down the East Coast to be home in time for HBYC Working Bee!

The Buccanneers are truly grateful for the support of all HBYC members and staff & especially Rod Austin who have bought soup & raffle tickets to help us fundraise for this very special cause and are hoping to sell out of both this Saturday after the penultimate Brass Monkey race

Raffle will  be drawn at 5pm so pls come on up to the bar to warm up your tummies and the cockles of your hearts .

This year The Willy Buccaneers from HBYC are raising funds for disabled and disadvantaged children in rural and regional areas of Australia.
