Inflation Reduction Act: Summary and Policy Analysis
President Biden recently signed the $750 billion Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) bill into law. This may be the most significant climate change legislation in U.S. history so far. It's exciting to finally see environmental policies make progress. The IRA will provide funds and opportunity for communities to tackle climate change and transition to cleaner energy options along with measures to reduce inflation and rising costs.

We've summarized noteworthy transportation, environmental justice, and neighborhood access items in the legislation, as well as one policy that did not make it but that would reduce transportation-generated carbon emissions
  an e-bike tax credit.

E-bikes have the potential to replace car trips: a 2021 study found access to e-bikes reduced people’s driving trips by 21%. Why? E-bikes reduce time spent in travel, overcome hills, and make biking more accessible.

Recently, Propel ATL met with Matt Alexis, a staffer for Congresswoman Nikema Williams, at Edison Bicycles to discuss the many benefits of e-bikes and the number one challenge to more people accessing them: affordability

We’re interested in e-bike incentive programs being implemented across the U.S. that provide greater access to e-bikes for sustainable transportation, especially for individuals and communities most impacted by ongoing racial injustices, systemic oppression, lack of economic opportunity, and racial disparities.

E-bikes are changing mobility in cities, and we would like to hear from you. Please take a minute to tell us about your interest in e-bikes: take a survey.

Community Advocates Network meeting: October 13th

At the August Community Advocates Network (CAN) meeting we heard from James M.F. Hicks, President of Mozley Park Neighborhood Association.

Mr. Hicks led an informative, actionable discussion on securing traffic calming and advocating for safe neighborhood streets. His tips resonated with residents across Atlanta and sparked a lively discussion. Our biggest takeaway? Community strength is built on persistence. Many thanks to Remerge for hosting!

You can enjoy the benefits of connecting with and learning from other community-based advocates for mobility by joining us
for the next CAN meeting on October 13, 2022.

Atlanta transportation updates

  • Rider alert: MARTA bus riders have noticed posted schedules don't always match trip times. On September 10th, changes to 60+ bus routes will will go into effect including increased weekday service and earlier start times on some routes, and schedule revisions to align with actual travel times on others. (Many routes are still operating on reduced frequency because of continued staff shortages: MARTA is hiring.)
  • BeltLine public meeting Sept 8: The Ponce de Leon / BeltLine connection project is intended to improve walking and biking between Boulevard and Freedom Parkway and build an ADA-accessible route between the street and the Eastside Trail.
  • The MARTA Reach rideshare pilot program ended August 31st.
