City redistricting is an opportunity for Johns Islanders to have a true voice.
The City of Charleston's redistricting is an historic opportunity for Johns Islanders to have a real say in our future.
Your input to the City is needed to make this happen.
The City of Charleston is going through a redistricting process that will have profound impact for all of Johns Island, not just that portion within the City.
The City had previously released a draft plan for their proposed redistricting. They have now released two alternatives, referred to as Alternative 1A and Alternative 1B. You can view a map of the districts here. Both alternatives are geographically the same, only the district numbers change --- Johns Island is either District 3 or District 6.
Both alternatives have all Johns Island in one district! This is the best opportunity in the City's history for Johns Island to have dedicated representation. To ensure Johns Island has a true voice in the City, we advocate that the City abandon the draft plan and instead implement either Alternative 1A or 1B.
We encourage you to take two minutes now and provide your comments to the City here. You do not have to be resident of the City to provide your comments. Comments will be accepted until noon on Sep 12th (Mon), but do not wait.
Redistricting will then be discussed at the Sep 13th (Tues) 5:00 pm City Council meeting. At that meeting staff will provide an overview of the proposed plans and share comments received from the public.
We encourage you to attend the Sep 13th Council meeting. During the Citizens Participation Period please speak out in favor of Alternatives 1A and 1B. You will need to signup to speak. The Council meeting will be held at City Hall (80 Broad Street, Charleston) and will be livestreamed here.
Our future is before it.
Act now to ensure it is the future we deserve.
