Research snapshot: Gender, affordable housing, and the “poverty gap” in Canada
The Vanier Institute of the Family, 18 August 2022
This study examines the experiences of women living in affordable housing in Calgary, Alberta to determine if and how gender influences their experiences and outcomes. Results confirm that gendered differences exist: The majority of the women surveyed lived with children, compared with just over half of the men; women were the only ones to report lack of access to child care as a barrier to employment and escaping domestic violence as a reason to move into affordable housing. Recommendations include increasing government funding to support women in affordable housing to gain access to employment training, education, low to no-cost child care and providing on-site support services for victims of domestic violence and trauma.

Re-envisioning an early years system of care towards equity in Canada: A critical, rapid review
International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 4 August 2022
Informed by intersectionality, this literature review aims to inform the building of an early learning and child care (ELCC) system that addresses unjust and potentially preventable child health inequities affecting Indigenous and racialized children in Canada. Findings show that orienting an ELCC system towards equity will require political leadership at all levels of government in concert with community knowledge and participation. Authors argue that a transformative political shift and a radical re-envisioning of programs and services is central to building a comprehensive and quality early years system of care with the capacity to reduce health inequities experienced by "vulnerable" young children.

The big short: Early childhood education expansion in post-pandemic Canada
University of Toronto, 15 June 2022
This study investigates whether the anticipated number of graduates from early childhood education (ECE) post secondary programs will be enough to meet the increased demand proposed by governmental investments in early learning and child care. Findings suggest that ECE graduates are likely to leave child care jobs within the first few years of graduating due to low wages, lack of opportunity for professional growth and an overall devaluation of the child care workforce. Policy recommendations to address the recruitment and retention of qualified ECEs include enforcing higher salaries that are more competitive with the provincial or national average, and benefits that are competitive with the total rewards offered in comparative fields.

Early childhood care: Working conditions, training and quality of services — A systematic review
European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions, 2015
This report reviews research evidence from all 28 EU Member States to identify how the training and development of ECEC workers can be tailored to improve the quality of the services available for children below primary-school age in EU Member States. Among other findings, it concludes that interventions in professional development that are integrated into existing practice—with a focus on reflection—can result in more effective practice and curricula
