The following stories were spotted in the news that feature the work of Minnesota’s watershed organizations. Please forward your stories to us so we don’t miss any of them. Watershed District plans to trap Como Lake Carp
The Capitol Region WD deployed four large box nets baited with corn on August 10 with the goal of catching and removing common carp over the next four or five weeks. (by Frederick Melo, Pioneer Press, August 9, 2022)

Minnesota Pollution Control Agency Invests in Cedar River Watershed District
The State of Minnesota is investing $78,000 to help the Cedar River WD and the city of Austin prepare for the effects of extreme weather and climate change. (KIMT3 News, August 17, 2022)
MAWD BOARD AND COMMITTEE UPDATES

MAWD Strategic Plan Committee. On August 22, the draft Strategic Plan was distributed to MAWD members. The Strategic Plan Committee respectfully requests that you review this draft Plan at your September board meeting(s) and send responses on behalf of your entire board by September 30. Responses should be sent to Jan Voit at admin@mnwatershed.org.  


MAWD Board of Directors (Board). The Board met on August 23. The treasurer’s report was approved, as were meeting minutes for April 18, June 20, July 25, and August 1.

Actions taken:

  • approved retaining Ray Bohn as lobbyist for two years and giving him the authority to seek a partner that will be approved by the Board,
  • approved drafting and distributing a request for proposals for an auditing firm for the 2023 fiscal year,
  • approved moving the executive director position description to the next meeting,
  • approved appointing Jan Voit as Interim Executive Director,
  • authorized legal counsel to draft a friend of the court brief on behalf of MAWD for the Polk County district court ruling, and
  • elected Jackie Anderson as treasurer.

2022 MAWD Annual Conference. The MAWD Events Committee called for abstracts for the 2022 MAWD Annual Conference. Speakers were invited to share their knowledge and findings that strengthen the management, protection, and restoration of the water resources in Minnesota, particularly those under the management of local watershed jurisdictions. The deadline to submit an abstract was August 26, 2022.

The MAWD Events Committee will meet in early September to review the abstracts. A schedule of events will be prepared. The MAWD Annual Conference will be held December 1-3 at the Arrowwood Conference Center in Alexandria, Minnesota.

September Meeting Calendar. The following meetings are scheduled in September. See the MAWD calendar for meeting details as soon as they become available.
