THE OFFICIAL COMMUNITY OUTREACH NEWSLETTER

Why do we canvas?

From the start of the Our Humanity project, canvassing is one of the main strategies we use to connect with the communities we are serving. Our staff members go door-to-door to better understand a neighborhood’s experience with COVID-19 by conducting surveys, educating through health literacy, and extending access to resources. Canvassing allows us the opportunity to not only learn more about community members' needs, but gives our organization a more active presence in the South Valley, San Jose, South Broadway, Westgate/West Mesa, and Santa Barbara/Martineztown.

How do we canvas?

We are excited to share with you how we canvas. We target specific areas in neighborhoods near where we are having events. We go door to door with flyers that have valuable information about our project, upcoming COVID-19 pop-up vaccinations, and your rights! We leave the information in people’s hands or on their door and if we can, we conduct a brief anonymous survey. We are here to help connect people to needed resources. We wear masks to make the people around us feel more safe and welcome and test for COVID-19 weekly. If you know of anybody who needs help with these items please email info@ourhumanitybernalillo.org or call (505) 295-5650.

Where do we canvas?

You may have seen us canvassing in the South Valley, San Jose, South Broadway, Westgate/West Mesa, and Santa Barbara/Martineztown. We canvas in neighborhoods close to where we’ve partnered on events so that we can invite community members to join us. The Our Humanity Bernalillo project is focused on neighborhoods that have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. We want to make sure community members have access to quality resources and information. We’ll be headed to Mountain View, Kirtland, Trumbull, and La Mesa over the next couple of months. We look forward to the cooler weather and to having the opportunity to speak to more of you!

Since April, we’ve visited over 5000 homes. If you weren’t home or we couldn’t get to your door, we left you a door hanger with flyers for upcoming events and some information about COVID-19. We will be going to houses twice during this project, to make sure we talk to as many community members as possible.

If we do miss you and you’d like to take our survey or you have questions about resources or something else, please feel free to reach out to info@ourhumanitybernalillo.org or call (505) 295-5650.

Your feedback and participation

If organizing a family project is complicated, then organizing an entire county is a little more difficult. Historically, some voices have been listened to while others have been silenced. Building a city where everyone's voice is heard is a project that will take time to perfect. Our Humanity Bernalillo wants to contribute to this process of many voices; We want to know the needs and the current well-being of our community. Your opinion is very important. We do not want to assume that we know what the community needs. We want to listen to you and listen to your neighbor.

Social policy changes should reflect the thinking of the people they affect the most.  That's why all the information that we collect by canvassing our neighborhoods gets organized into a simple format that can be shared with policy makers. Changes should come from the heart of the community, not from a comfortable but distant office.

You have the power to make this project more representative by sharing your opinion and recommendations. There are various ways to participate–one is when we knock on your door, another is at our events and, of course, you can always contact us by phone or email. If you are interested in participating in a community advisory board please contact us at info@ourhumanitybernalillo.org or call (505) 295-5650.

Achieving healthy equity in our neighborhoods is possible by creating a social tapestry that welcomes everyone’s participation. Our Humanity Bernalillo, we are with you!

Want to learn how to roast green chile in NM without using a mesh tumbler? There are a couple of ways to do that! The main three are stove top, oven broiler, and a grill.
  1. Stove top: Char the chiles on a stove top over an open flame. Watch your hands!
  2. Oven broiler: Put the chiles on a foil lined roasting pan a few inches under a pre heated boiler for 15 – 20 min. Check them every few minutes!
  3. Place the chiles on a grill over high direct heat. Please check them every few minute. As close to the coal as possible!
