SEPTEMBER 2022

President’s Message

It has been a difficult bush season with so much rain and the need to reschedule our program. Thanks to Nick Wilmott for organising the Pairs Event at the Botanic Gardens in July. It was a good fun event and the winners Mark and Alton Freeman, received lovely carved wooden trophies.  Mark Freeman was a member of Goldseekers some years ago, when he was working at the Orange Hospital. He was our newsletter editor at the time and the originator of the Goldseekers Compass newsletter.
The weather was so bad in August that after several attempts, we had to cancel that event. Oaky Creek was so high that the course-setter, Rob Bennett had great difficulty crossing it and there were a lot of fallen trees due to the saturated soil, coupled with a period of very strong winds. Thank you, Rob, for your efforts.  We hope to run Rob’s courses at some time in the future.

Congratulations to the Slater/Dowling family for their excellent results at the recent ACT Championships.  Matthew did particularly well to win the M12A class at the Middle Distance event and come second in the Long Distance.  Matthew has been selected to join the All Australian Invitational Development Team.  He will compete in the School events at the National Carnival in the gold-mining terrain of Victoria in September.  Good luck Matthew! Goldseekers have donated $300 to Matthew’s family to help with his travel and entry costs.  The club has always supported Juniors in this way.

Several SI units are missing. If you have any please contact Clinton Russell.

Next Event at Ophir North, Sunday 11 September
Although the weather is warming up at last, the ground is extremely wet and the forecast is for above average rainfall for September. It is impossible to plan more than 7 days ahead! At our last committee meeting we decided to move the Ophir North event to 11 September, as the weather looked more promising then, but now we are not so sure!
However, Ophir North is planned to be a simple event with just Start and Finish SI control units. There will be flags at all the control sites with a pink tape with the control number. That way the flags can go out in advance, without the risk of losing expensive SI units and control stands. Harry L’Estrange is planning the courses. Nick Wilmott has kindly offered to do coaching on the day for individuals or small groups.
Access to the area is ONLY from the NORTH, via Ophir Road, as the Summer Hill Creek is still flooded and the Causeway at Ophir is closed.
Start times from 10am. Please be on time if you are taking up Nick’s offer of coaching. Also, please check our website before the event, in case we need to postpone the event again. There will be orienteering signs from Ophir Road at Clifton Grove.

October event
We had hoped to have an event at Kahli’s Rocks but the land is incredibly wet there so we have decided to seek an alternative venue. At this stage, it is likely to be on the Pinecliffe property near Molong that belongs to Bennelong Orienteer, Steve Flick. There will be more information on this in our next newsletter and on the website.

NSW State Long Championships, Sunday 6 November
The NSW State Championships have also been adversely affected by the wet weather, particularly the Long Champs that were to be held at Gumble near Molong. Goldseekers have offered to hold the Long Champs at Rocky Falls instead. This will be on Sunday 6 November.
We are looking for help from ALL club members, please. Nick Wilmott is the Event Organiser and will need people to help with setting up, parking and at the Start. We hope to get a good team so that everybody can also have a run, if they wish. Clinton Russell will be doing the timing.
Please contact Nick on 0424 221 615 or by email wilmottz.nw2@gmail.com if you can help.
