MAS News, Events & Courses...

Friends,

Well, its official I am now officially a retired person and I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for making the past 36 years so rewarding. I never thought when I became the Museums Advisor in 1986 that I would still be with MAS in 2022 nor that I would become the Executive Director! I’ve learned so much while working for MAS and been part of so many important projects – Standards for Saskatchewan Museums and SaskCollections to name just two. In my travels around the province, I have learned so much. I long ago lost count of the number of kilometres I’ve driven in various MASmobiles visiting museums from Denare Beach, in the northeast, Consul, in the southwest.

I’m looking forward to puttering in the garden, reading and who knows I may even get around to writing down some of my adventures!

Thanks to all of you for allowing me to the privilege and honour of working with you over the years and make some small contribution to the betterment of Saskatchewan’s museum community.

Until we meet again take care,

Wendy

Exemplary tourism team commended in Kindersley
westcentralonline.com

Kindersley Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kevin Martin works out of the museum building, and noticed first hand how busy the tourism team was all summer long.

"I applaud the efforts. They are always thinking of different things to do," said Martin, recalling one of his favourite times from this summer, "They had this old (fashion show) where people were dressing up in clothing from the 30s, 40s, and 50s."

Once the final summer staff member departs it will be a lot less busy at the museum, but Martin wants people to know that as long as somebody is present the museum is open for seeing eyes. Perhaps they will see more late season traffic after so much promotion into tourism, and strong peak season numbers that were very enticing to see according to Martin.

"You know, they have had just about 3000 people come out there this year. I was quite surprised at that number, I didn't realize it would be that high," shared Martin. "The efforts and stuff they are doing help contribute to that, so they are just trying to keep the museum more relevant and busy."

Wapaha Sk̄a Oyate: Living Our Culture, Sharing our Community at Pion-Era, 1955 - 69 Exhibit

Visit the new co-curated exhibit Wapaha Sk̄a Oyate: Living Our Culture, Sharing our Community at Pion-Era, 1955 - 69, opening on permanent display at the WDM Saskatoon on September 22.

Every summer from 1955 to 1969, Whitecap Dakota First Nation participated in Pion-Era. Families set up a tipi camp, demonstrated cultural activities and livestock and horsemanship skills as working cowboys, educating visitors about Dakota life.

At Pion-Era, Indigenous people and settlers each showcased their own histories, agricultural practices and machinery, livestock and horse demonstrations, blacksmithing and cultural dances. For 15 years, Whitecap Dakota First Nation’s participation at Pion-Era was central to the success of the show.

Today, they are restoring their relationship to once again showcase Dakota history and culture at the WDM.

Wapaha Sk̄a Oyate: Living Our Culture, Sharing our Community at Pion-Era, 1955 - 69 is included with Museum admission. Free for WDM members.

Explore the history and mystery of the RCMP Heritage Centre
thestarphoenix.com

At the RCMP Heritage Centre in Regina, visitors can learn about Canada's national police from multiple perspectives.

Visitors to the centre include tourists from across Canada and the world, but many of its programs are particularly well-suited to families from within Saskatchewan. “The programs that we’re offering in the fall are for community groups and for tourist groups,” said Robinson. “For those, we talk about various components like Honouring the Buffalo, the History of the Red Serge, Métis and the RCMP, the Northwest Campaign, and the three different sides of history.”

Other programs are designed to support school curricula. “Those are both regarding the RCMP, but also around Truth and Reconciliation, because it’s very important for us that we are working with Indigenous partners to build these new education programs — working with Indigenous partners and working with the RCMP itself,” said Robinson.

McGill University Library Map Collection Now on Canadiana

CRKN is pleased to announce that approximately 22,000 digitized Canadian maps have been added to the Canadiana Collection in partnership with McGill University Library. In addition to being publicly accessible on Canadiana.ca, the digitized maps will also be preserved in the Canadiana Trusted Digital Repository (TDR). These digital maps and data support longitudinal historical research and may be of interest to cross-disciplinary researchers studying land use and environmental change over time, including industrial development, urban studies, climate change, and more.

The maps, digitized by McGill University Library, are from the 1:50,000 scale National Topographic Series and date from 1905 to 2012. The maps depict in detail ground relief (landforms and terrain), drainage (lakes and rivers), forest cover, administrative areas, populated areas, transportation routes and facilities (including roads and railways), and other human-made features such as buildings, power lines and dams. The collection includes both colour and grayscale maps.

This collection represents the first time the Canadiana Collection has included a non-textual document type and is the first large-scale addition of CRKN member content to the Canadiana collection. The map collection benefits from Canadiana’s newly updated user interface, which includes an International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) viewer, with pan and zoom capabilities. Read more about the updated Canadiana interface.

Portions of the 1:50,000 scale National Topographic Series Map Collection are also available through Scholars GeoPortal and Borealis, where maps have been georeferenced to create geospatial datasets for open use in research and historical analysis.  Digitization, georeferencing, metadata, and infrastructure support are provided through funding from the University of Toronto Libraries, McGill University Libraries, and Compute Ontario.

This release builds on the role that academic libraries continue to play in preserving our national heritage and supporting digital research use of collections. To view the 1:50,000 scale National Topographic Series Map Collection, visit the Canadiana website.

For questions, comments, or feedback on the collection, please contact Francesca Brzezicki, Communications Specialist, at fbrzezicki@crkn.ca.

Lougheed House exhibition explores Metis residential school history
CTV News

A new exhibition at Lougheed House explores the Metis residential school experience in a broad context, and the Lougheed House connection to the story. The exhibition, presented in two parts, is being done in partnership with the Metis Nation of Alberta, Region 3, with support from the Alberta Museums Association. The first part is Forgotten: The Metis Residential School Story from the Legacy of Hope Foundation, while the second part is Remembered: The Story of Metis Children at St. Joseph's-Dunbow Industrial School. "This exhibition is interesting in that it shares both a broad perspective, and the history of local Métis experience here in Calgary. It will help grow awareness in our communities of the history that has shaped the world we live in today," said Lougheed House executive director Naomi Grattan.

Shurniak Art Gallery: Meeting for Teas: On the Road to Decolonization

Shurniak Art Gallery and the Meeting for Teas Artist Collective are pleased to present
Meeting for Teas: On the Road to Decolonization, a series of events exploring local and global tea culture including World Tea Salon Assiniboia, art exhibition, Mad Hatter Children’s Show, public talks & a land interpretive walk. Everyone is welcome. Free entrance, free cups of tea!

Meeting for Teas: On the Road to Decolonization is a collaborative research and community outreach project led by artists. It is an opportunity to reflect on the impact of the colonial tea trade while celebrating Indigenous traditions of sharing cheyaka tea and performative tea ceremonies.  Why tea and why now? In an age in which increased human sensitivity has become such an obvious need in all areas of human involvement, the sharing of tea constitutes an antidote to the forces of insensitivity.

World Tea Salon Assiniboia    September 15 to 17
Thematic tea gatherings and art performances in the Shurniak Art Gallery.

The World Tea Salon Assiniboia will resemble a traditional teahouse with artworks, objects of curiosity and magnificent tea utensils, including those belonging to the Bill Shurniak Collection. Everyone is encouraged to meet over bowls and cups of tea. Animated by tea master and calligrapher, Bryan Mulvihill, truly one of Vancouver’s “living cultural treasures,” audiences of all ages will be introduced to multicultural tea gatherings. First Nation herbal tea events will be led by artist and educator Kimisoo Goodtrack. Saskatoon-based Xiao Han and Qiming Sun will present unique performances exploring storytelling and the significant history and practice of tea with its origins in China.
