Work Health & Safety Laws Include Volunteers
New work health and safety laws came into effect on 31 March 2022 and now recognise the role of volunteers and their right to be safe.

WorkSafe Western Australia has developed a guide on how the new laws apply to organisations which engage volunteers. It outlines the primary duty that organisations have to workers and volunteers and how to meet this duty.

WorkSafe can be contacted about the new work health and safety laws by telephone on 1300 307 877 or email  safety@dmirs.wa.gov.au.

Negligence, accidents and incidents
Negligence - When providing services to your clients or the public, your community organisation needs to consider its duty of care, and the standard of care it is required to meet. A community organisation may be liable (legally responsible) for a breach of a duty of care, which results in damage (for example, injury, property damage or financial loss) to a person who the organisation owes a duty. Download the negligence fact sheet here

Accidents & Incidents - are sometimes unavoidable (but sometimes they could have been avoided if a proper risk assessment had been done. Check out a free Risk Management and Insurance Guide provided by Justice Connect. It's important for your organisation to take appropriate steps when accidents and incidents occur.
