The Quaker City:
A Walking Tour of Old City
Saturday, September 3rd, 11 am to 12 pm
Experience our brand new walking tour of Quaker sites in Old City, Philadelphia, and a hands-on Quaker history workshop facilitated by an ASMH staff member!
The tour begins with a brief exploration of the historic burial grounds at ASMH before continuing on a walking tour of important Quaker sites throughout the neighborhood. This is not just your run-of-the-mill famous Founding Fathers' tour! It is perfect for visitors who are seeking a different side of Philadelphia history.
This tour is FREE and registration is not required. Support provided by the Philadelphia Cultural Fund.

Educational Saturday: Silhouettes
Saturday, September 3rd at 1 pm

Quakers have a history of utilizing silhouettes to connect with both extended family and prominent Friends. Join ASMH staff and volunteers in the East Room to try your hand at making some yourself!
This program is FREE and registration is not required.

Quakers, Faith, and Prison Reform
For centuries, Quakers have played a role in prison reform. In 1800s Philadelphia, the Quaker tenets of silence and reflection inspired Eastern State Penitentiary’s revolutionary separate system. Several wardens and a myriad of Eastern State staff and visitors were Quakers, and all hoped that the penitentiary would encourage penitence and transform the lives of its inhabitants for the better. Today, many practicing Quakers continue to advocate for change within our criminal justice system.
Meet staff from Arch Street Meeting House as they discuss how Quaker beliefs have influenced parishioners’ commitment to prison reform, the Quaker origins of Eastern State, and this faith’s continuing influence in prisons today.

Liturgies of Empire, Liturgies of Resistance:
Quaker Faith and Practice in an Age of Empire

Join Wess Daniels on Wednesday, September 3rd from 7 pm to 8 pm for a virtual Zoom presentation.
Resisting Empire is a series Wess Daniels has been developing since long before the release of his first book, "Resisting Empire: The Book of Revelation as Resistance" (2019 - Barclay Press). Since that publication, Wess has been working applying lessons from that previous project to Quaker movement and what Quaker practice looks like today. In this presentation, Wess will unpack the importance of seeing how various liturgies shape us and lay groundwork for Quakers to consider ways of resisting empire today.
C. Wess Daniels is the William R. Rogers Director of Friends Center & Quaker Studies at Guilford College. He lives in Greensboro, North Carolina with his wife, Emily and their three children. He has a Master's of Theology and P.hD. in Intercultural Studies from Fuller Theological Seminary. Wess teaches Quaker studies at Guilford College and has taught at Earlham School of Religion, George Fox Seminary, Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre, and Pendle Hill.

He is widely published in Quaker publications including Quaker Studies, Quaker Religious Thought, Friends Journal, and more. He is the author of, “Resisting Empire: The Book of Revelation as Resistance” (2019) and “A Convergent Model of Renewal: Remixing The Quaker Tradition in Participatory Culture” (2015). He is an associate editor on the Brill Research Perspectives in Quaker Studies, and the co-editor on the forthcoming book, The Quaker World (Routledge, 2022).

Movie Night at ASMH:
The Addams Family (1991)

Arch Street Meeting House will be doing an outdoor screening of the 1991 fan favourite, The Addams Family!
Arch Street Meeting House will be hosting a private screening of The Addams Family outdoors on our historic grounds on Friday, September 23rd, from 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm. For a suggested donation of $5, grab a picnic blanket, snacks, and BYOB for a special movie night in Old City.

Registration is required and includes admission to the museum prior to the screening. In the event of rain, the screening will be moved indoors to the East Room of the Museum.
All attendees are required to practice social distancing and wear a mask when in close proximity to others or entering the building at Arch Street Meeting House.

Cemetery Crawl
Saturday, September 24th at 10 am to 4 pm
Join Arch Street Meeting House and local cemeteries across the city on Saturday, September 24th for the First Annual Cemetery Crawl! Participating members of the Living Cemetery Alliance of Greater Philadelphia (LCAGP) will offer tours, open houses, educational programming, and more!
Visit the LCAGP Facebook page for more information about the day's festivities. In the event of inclement weather, the crawl will move to September 25.
Participating cemeteries are Arch Street Meeting House, Christ Church Burial Ground, Eden Cemetery, Fair Hill Cemetery, Laurel Hill, Mount Moriah, and The Woodlands.

Updated Museum Hours
It has been quite the Summer on our little corner of Old City, but we are preparing for a fun-filled Fall of school tours, programs, and more!
ASMH will now be open Thursday - Sunday, from 10 am to 4 pm.

A Recording of "Sidney George Fisher: Philly's Premier Diarist in the Era of Civil War" is now available!
|
|
|
|
On Wednesday, August 10th Dan Crofts discussed the writings and life of Sidney George Fisher. Sidney George Fisher kept a voluminous diary and observed the changing Philadelphia in the years before, during, and after the Civil War. Although not a practicing Friend, he had Quaker relatives who provided a context for his insights into the world around him.

Arch Street Meeting House will be closed to the public on Friday, September 9th, and Saturday, September 10th.

Our volunteers have been working hard this summer to maintain our gardens and help our visitors Meet Quaker History while exploring the museum. If you're interested in joining this amazing team, contact us for more information.
Being a practicing Quaker is not a requirement, but enthusiasm is a must!
