History tends to repeat itself.

Back in March 2020, we were entering into the unknown. The pandemic was taking hold, and everyone across the globe was trying to determine the appropriate courses of action.

At that time, I wrote: "I have been thinking about the choices we make and the ways in which we conduct ourselves in our community…On the face of it, collaboration seems like a natural state. The problem exists, and we need to work together to solve it. As we all know, it isn't that easy."

Now, in September 2022, we are confronting countless reminders of how difficult collaboration can be.

Three Rookie Mistakes That Can Make or Break Your Grant Proposal

The thought of writing a grant proposal can be intimidating for folks who are new to the process. There are multiple steps involved, multiple people to connect with, and multiple decisions to make. Mistakes sometimes happen along the way—it’s just the nature of the beast.

Fortunately, one way to help avoid making mistakes is to learn from others’ errors. During Purdue Extension’s Beginner’s Guide to Grant Writing workshop, participants meet with a local panel of experts to learn from their experiences.

The two-day, in-person Beginner's Guide to Grant Writing program is a great skill builder for the beginner to intermediate grant writer. Whatever your skill level, come with an idea and be ready to write. At the end of Day One, you will have a proposal outline and all of the resources you need to expand your outline into a full proposal.

Do you find yourself guiding or coaching community groups? If so, consider registering for the Community Coaching Learning Circle. Purdue Extension Community Development is offering a professional development opportunity for individuals interested in honing their community coaching skills.   
Through participating in this learning community, you will:
  • Increase your knowledge of the principles and practices of community coaching
  • Reflect on and increase your self-awareness of your role in different groups
  • Identify your community coaching style and personal philosophy
  • Deepen your capacity to coach community groups in a variety of situations
  • Build a network of colleagues to support continued learning and practice
Once registered, access to the learning community non-credit course will open on September 12th and have live Zoom meetings every other Monday, 2:00-3:30 pm ET from September 19 - November 28, 2022.  The meetings will include small group discussions. To be fair to fellow group members, participants must be available to attend all meetings. Participants will have approximately 1.5 hours of online coursework between meetings consisting of reading, videos and self-reflection exercises. Space is limited. 

A prerequisite to the Community Coaching Learning Circle is experience working with community groups/teams, in particular guiding these groups/teams through the process of achieving their goals. 

The cost for the course is $450. Purdue Extension educators/CWCs are eligible for a staff discount, please contact Tanya Hall for more information. Registration ends on September 7, 2022.

The Wealth of Households: 2022

Wealth is an important indicator of economic well-being that provides valuable insights into a household’s economic health. For example, during financial hardships, such as unemployment, illness, or divorce, wealth is a source of liquidity to pay expenses and bills. This brief uses the 2021 Survey of Income and Program Participation to examine household wealth in 2020.

$6 Billion in Balances

Mid-July is number-cruncher nirvana if you follow the Indiana state budget. That’s when the State Budget Agency releases its closeout for the previous fiscal year. This year the glorious day fell on Friday, July 15, and we learned one astounding fact: At the end of June, the end of fiscal year 2022, Indiana balances were $6.1 billion. Our state has six billion dollars in the bank. 

Perhaps a billion dollars isn’t as impressive as it once was. It’s pocket change for our richest billionaires. It’s rounding error for the federal government. For the Indiana budget, though, it’s a very large number.
