As night-time temperatures drop, it's a great time to plant trees, shrubs, and perennials.  Water them well.  The warm soil temperatures will help them root out, and they will have two cool seasons to grow before having to weather next summer's heat.  More about fall planting here.

Here are five (of many) plants in stock that are perfect for fall planting.
White Wood Aster is a great filler plant. Use it between other perennials and shrubs as a living mulch. Its delicate baby's breath type flower will fill in all the gaps in your bed.  It spreads readily by wind-borne seed. Skip adding bark mulch each year with this plant, and provide important late season nectar for butterflies at the same time.  Part shade to shade, tolerates dry sites.
The white bark of paper-bark birch draws your eye immediately.  Its beautiful, peeling strips make them the perfect subject for many landscape paintings. Add in the pure yellow fall leaves, and you'll be gazing at it all through the fall. Give it some afternoon shade and medium to wet, well drained soil.  More info HERE.
Bayberry leaves are glossy and semi-evergreen. Great in a hedgerow or back of the border. It is deer resistant, and can grow in sandy or clay soils.  Bayberry creates its own nitrogen and will tolerate poor soils.  More info HERE.
Ferns are great for shade gardens, and especially useful in areas with high deer pressure.  There are species for dry sites, and species for wet sites.  In stock now are:
Dryopteris marginalis (Eastern Wood Fern)
Dryopteris goldiana (Goldie's Wood Fern)
Polystichum acrostichoides (Christmas Fern)
Osmunda regalis var. spectabilis (Royal Fern)
Onoclea sensibilis (Sensitive Fern)
Adiantum pedatum (Northern Maidenhair Fern)
Osmunda claytonia (Interrupted Fern)
Golden Alexander/Zizia Aurea. Prolific yellow flowers in spring followed by burgundy seed heads in summer. Great for filling an area. Adaptable and easy to grow. Tolerates heavy clay soils in semi-shade to full sun. As long is there is moisture in the spring, it's happy! Host plant for swallowtail butterfly. Don't forget to water your plants.  All plants need water until they are established.  Trees and shrubs planted last year will appreciate water this year during this dry spell. A one to two inch layer of mulch helps keep soil moist.  Read here for more watering tips and guidelines.
