Hello <<First Name>>,

September Welcome Back Meeting

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

When: Sat., Sept 24
10 am - Social Time and sign-ups for Interest Groups

10:30 am-noon - Program - Please bring a mug for coffee or tea

Where: First United Methodist Church, Wesley Hall, 175 N. Main St., Ashland

Our speaker at our Welcome Back meeting will be Toya Cooper, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion VP at SOU since November 2021. Cooper brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this position. Prior to joining SOU, she served as Marist College’s Director of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, and Compliance and Title IX Coordinator. Previously, she was an admissions counselor and multicultural program coordinator for her alma mater, Westmont College in Santa Barbara. After earning her law degree at Willamette University College of Law, she returned to Westmont College where she served in various capacities related to diversity and law. She also served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for Children (CASA) in Santa Barbara County.

These fields of study and experience have enabled Cooper to focus on diversity initiatives, multicultural programs, inclusion, and related legal matters in college and university settings. You don’t want to miss this opportunity to garner insight into equity, diversity, and inclusion in higher education generally and what is happening on these issues at SOU, and also what it means for us in the AAUW community.

Good news:  We will have in person sign-ups for Interest Groups, so if you need space for sign-ups, at the meeting, please let Peggy Audibert know.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there!!!

President's Message

 Welcome Back!

What a terrific summer it’s been; an almost completely smoke free Ashland.  I wake up each morning grateful for the blue skies, even though the triple digit temperatures are so hard on my little garden. I have stayed home this summer to enjoy playing with grandchildren, hosting friends from all over the world, swimming a lot and generally having a ball.  Now, I’m ready to get back to work.

Great news:   We have a co-President in the very capable Regina Ayars, who has recently headed our Public Policy team and for the last few years has facilitated, with great finesse, I might add, our Public Policy meetings with Ashland city council members and prior to that our city council candidates' forum.  She is really good at this and we are so lucky to have her on board.

More great news:  It appears that COVID is abating, certainly not disappearing, but new vaccines for recent variations of the virus are due out in or about October.  This means that so far we will be meeting in person, at the Methodist Church on Main St, unless something changes radically.

I hope you’ve all enjoyed your summers, as well, and look forward to seeing you at the Welcome Back meeting.

Oregon AAUW Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Title IX

Title IX of the Education Amendments of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed into law on June 23, 1972.

Ninety-nine members from 20 of our 23 Oregon branches donated $8,278 to the Greatest Needs Fund to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX. Eleven Ashland members contributed $700. Thank you, members!

Title IX is best known for its impact on female athletics. The number of female athletes has climbed more than ten times since the law was passed.

Title IX protects students as well as staff in elementary schools, secondary schools, colleges and universities, for profit schools, career and technical education programs, libraries and museums receiving federal funding.

Despite the progress toward gender equity realized by the passing of Title IX, there is still room for improvement.  Sexual harassment continues to be a significant problem for female students, creating barriers to an equal education. Boys and men still dominate STEM and other fields that lead to the highest paying jobs. Full implementation of Title IX will require stronger enforcement as well as more resources, training and technical assistance for schools.

In Our Thoughts

Claire Carroll, a long- time member of AAUW passed away peacefully January 6th this year at age 94. Claire was very active with all of our events, projects, and many interest groups for over thirty years. Claire received the Florence Schneider Award in 2005.

Membership News

At the July 22 OLLI open house held at SOU, our Ashland branch had the opportunity to share a table with the Medford Branch and spread the word about AAUW. We talked with many women and several men all about the work and purpose of AAUW.  Over 25 new member applications were handed out to women (and one man) who were interested in learning more about us.

One of our newest members is a student at SOU named Veronica Engle. We also are very pleased to announce officially the following new members: Rebecca Blair, Denise Crosby, Mary Catherine Davalos, Margaret Dwyer, Sonya (Sunny) Hawkins, Sheree Sobel, Terrie Jensen, and Dennise Trager. We will be posting bios of each of our new members on the website over the next few months. Welcome to all our nine new members and the 122 renewing members. Let’s hope that all remaining members who haven’t yet sent in their registration complete that by our first September branch meeting. Our branch is most successful with all of us combined together.

Dollars for Scholars Annual Scholarship
Fundraising Campaign Kickoff

We are excited to announce the kickoff of our 2022 Dollars for Scholars campaign for local annual scholarships.  This year’s campaign marks the 32nd year that the Ashland Branch has been helping women in this valley realize their educational dreams.

We, in the Branch, all share a deep commitment to supporting women’s education in the Rogue Valley.  The scholarships that we have been awarding for the past 31 years have helped countless women realize their dreams of becoming educated and self-sufficient.

This year’s campaign will run from October 1 to December 1.  Soon, in the mail, you’ll be receiving a request for your participation in this year’s campaign.

You can make a difference in insuring that this campaign is, yet again, such a success.  Please take a moment to read the solicitation letter when it arrives in your mailbox and consider again making a gift this year.   Together we can make a significant difference in the lives of local women!

Thank you for your commitment to and support of AAUW’s primary mission of significantly changing the lives of local women.

Maslow Project Back to School Gift Drive!
No matter what's happening in the world, the beginning of the school year should always feel hopeful. Fresh notebooks, good pencils -- and maybe a new pair of shoes or a pair of pants -- can help even a nervous child feel excited about the first day back.

Every student should have that experience. That's why I'm partnering with the Maslow Project on a Back to School gift card drive. If you can, please consider purchasing a gift card to be distributed to children in families at risk of homelessness. Our goal is to ensure that every kiddo walks in to the first day of school with a smile, and some hope.

Heartfelt thanks for whatever you can contribute. In this challenging world, let's make the start of the school year a great beginning for all of our children.

Public Policy Committee

Regina Ayars, our long-time Public Policy Chair, has stepped up to the Branch Co-Presidency and so Public Policy is starting fresh this year with a new Chair: me.  I’m relatively new to both AAUW Ashland Branch and to the Public Policy Committee, having joined both at the beginning of 2021.  I do love public policy and look forward to this challenge.

In addition, Trish Garner, the excellent and long-time AAUW State Public Policy Chair, has retired and gone on to diversity, equity and inclusion work for the State AAUW.  Linda Lybecker, President of AAUW of Oregon, has chosen Claire Berger and Nadyne Rosin as co-chairs of the State Public Policy Committee; they will represent Public Policy on the AAUW State Board and are looking at “restructuring committee processes and protocol.”  They want to focus deeply on fewer issues and plan to call a Zoom meeting with Branch chairs soon.

Ideas that have percolated up for our Branch Public Policy team include working on 1) a curriculum requirement for teaching personal finance management in schools (involving state legislation) and 2) ways to support child care policy in Jackson County as a means to support and advocate for women and girls.  More to come!
