Chapter News: September 2022

Welcome New Officers and Chaplain!

The nominating committee recommended James Adams for Dean and Kathleen Turner for Sub-dean. They were duly elected and we congratulate them! Dean Adams appointed The Rev. John Ruehl as chapter chaplain.
Jim Adams, Dean, is a public school music teacher by training and church musician by avocation. He received music education degrees from Virginia Commonwealth, Florida State, and Georgia Southern Universities, with piano as his major instrument. While in high school, he was asked to direct the adult choir in his small home church, and has held church positions off and on ever since. Jim began playing organ as many church musicians do, by necessity. His organ training has solely been through AGO and Presbyterian music conferences -- and the guidance of helpful colleagues. After teaching elementary general music for 40 years, Jim retired in 2020. His church positions in south Georgia have been at Flemington Presbyterian, First Presbyterian Savannah, and since 2014, White Bluff Presbyterian. When not practicing or planning worship, Jim enjoys travel, yard work, and reading.
Kathleen Turner, Sub-dean, is Director of Music Ministries at St. Peter's Episcopal Church on Skidaway Island. She is a native of upstate New York and earned a double Bachelor of Arts degree in organ and oboe from the Eastman School of Music. Her teachers were David Craighead and Richard Killmer and she received the coveted Performer’s Certificate in both instruments. She also holds a Master of Music degree from Westminster Choir College. Kathleen won the MTNA Wurlitzer Collegiate National Organ Competition and has had a thirty-five-year career in sacred music serving the Episcopal Church. She was also the Managing Music Director of the 79th General Convention of the Episcopal Church in 2018. She has an active performing and conducting career and is a published composer. She is happily married to her husband Roy “Te,” is Mom to her cherished son, Chris, and a lover of dogs!
Serving as chaplain is Rev. John Ruehl, Transitional Pastor at White Bluff Presbyterian Church. John is married to the Rev. Chrissy Ruehl, a UMC Deacon, and they have two young children. John received his MDiv from Columbia Theological Seminary, He is pursuing a DMin through Drew University (Madison NJ) focussing on Courageous Leadership. John was born in Islip, NY and was raised by his mom in DeLand FL with his three sisters. He enjoys hiking, boating, camping and being outside and is a lifelong fan of baseball, specifically the New York Mets.

Dean's Message

Greetings Chapter Members and Friends,

I am Jim Adams and am pleased to have been chosen Dean of the Savannah Chapter of the AGO. I served as AGO treasurer for several years, and always enjoyed the camaraderie and professionalism of the board. Membership in the AGO is not about personal aggrandizement. We are here to cultivate church music - organ music in particular - that will edify and uplift not only ourselves but also our congregations and recital audiences.  I am gratified that Kathleen Turner has agreed to serve as Sub-Dean and that the rest of the previous board will continue to serve.

As I write this message the board has not yet met to plan the program year. I anticipate that this year we will have a dinner and installation service, a member recital, and at least one educational session of interest to members. We'll see what other ideas board members bring to the table. You will receive an email by the end of next week outlining events for September and October.

You can help your AGO by contacting church musicians who are not members, inviting them to join, and attending as many programs as possible. My hope is that this year our  AGO will offer a variety of programs so that there will be at least one event that you would enjoy.
