Local Church Member Killed in
Grocery Store Shooting

On Sunday, August 28th, tragedy struck at a Safeway in Bend, Oregon. An armed young man entered the grocery store and opened fire, killing Glen Edward Bennett, an 84-year-old customer. Donald Ray Surrett, Jr., a member of the Cascade Seventh-day Adventist Church, an active volunteer at the La Pine Adventist church, and an employee at Safeway, engaged the young man and was killed in the struggle – giving his life and likely preventing further casualties in doing so. The armed young man was found dead as well, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

We ask that you remember the Bend, Cascade Adventist, and La Pine Adventist communities in prayer as they process their grief and these recent, traumatic events. John 15:13 tells us that, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Donald Ray Surrett, Jr. was an Army veteran who served for more than two decades as a combat engineer, and he spent his final moments laying his life down for those around him. Let us, as an Oregon Conference family, remember his loved ones today and hold their grief close in our prayers.
