The Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Cost of Following Jesus
There is a cost to belong to God. Philemon was confronted with this as Paul urged him to receive his runaway slave Onesimus back without charging him. Yet Paul volunteered to pay Onesimus’ debt. His action reminds us of what Christ has done to pay all our debts of sin against God. Because our debt is paid, we do not hold on to the debt of sin others owe us but instead show them the rich love of God.
The Bible readings for this coming Sunday and Monday are:
Deuteronomy 30:15-20
Psalm 1
Philemon 1:1, 7-21
Luke 14:25-35
