I Can... and I Did!

Education is the great “leveler” in nearly every society. It is no different in Romania, but it is especially important for orphaned and abandoned children. A good education for these children is the way out, the way to break the cycle of poverty, abuse, abandonment, and despair. One of NOROC’s main emphases is on education. Through identification of need by our small group leaders, social workers, and psychologists, remediation with our tutors, and advocacy and encouragement from the entire NOROC staff these children and young people can, and do, succeed. With little or no educational encouragement from the state institutions the children often miss classes, fail, give up, and drop out of school. With NOROC’s support, however, they are able to reach higher goals than anyone imagined! Educational success is a recurring theme in NOROC’s ministry and has already made a difference in the lives of so many young people. The list is long, and gets longer every year.

The NOROC staff is quite creative, but they are not above using some motivational techniques. In addition to regularly celebrating successes within small groups, NOROC has in place a program called “Eu Pot!”, which means “I Can!” in English. For those children who attend school regularly and pass their courses, a special reward is offered at the end of the year. This year it was a trip to Constanta, an ancient seaport on the Black Sea. Through your donations a large bus was rented and the children who qualified were treated to a day of fun, including a trip to the Delfinariu where they watched dolphins do amazing things. Lunch at the City Mall and other excursions around the city completed a wonderful day.
The result of NOROC’s emphasis on education is that this past year one more student under its tutelage joined the ranks of those who have already graduated with either an associate, bachelor’s, or master’s degree bringing the current total to over 30. (This young woman is pictured below.) Six additional students graduated from high school this year and two of those will begin university studies in the fall. A total of 13 students who are sponsored by NOROC will be attending a university this fall. Many others will be entering or continuing post-high school vocation studies. Before NOROC’s intervention, none of the children from the orphanages in Tulcea County had attended a university, few entered high school, and even fewer graduated. With your help God has worked through the NOROC staff to make many dreams come true!
We are still in need of Tuition Grant sponsors for three of our university students this year. The total amount needed for each student is only $1,300 for the entire year. What a bargain! If you would like to commit to a sponsorship, please contact Carol Schempp at: caschempp@sbcglobal.net for additional information. Even a partial grant will help these students reach their goals.  With God all things are possible.

NOROC continues its mission to both the orphaned and abandoned children in Tulcea County as well as to the Ukrainian refugees under their care. That mission is “To share God’s blessings by providing new opportunities for Romanian orphaned children spiritually, developmentally, socially, and medically.” The members of the NOROC staff are carrying out their faith as the hands, feet, and heart of God as they minister to the children and the refugees. Thanks be to God for your generous donations that make all of this possible!

If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation, send your check to the address below with “NOROC Ministry” or “Ukrainian Relief” on the memo line.

Since we have no administrative costs, every penny we receive goes to support our programs and to carry out our mission: To offer new opportunities for spiritual, physical, educational and emotional growth so that at-risk Romanian institutionalized children may escape cycles of poverty, dependency and abuse, and may become independent adults who can nurture meaningful relationships and contribute to their communities. Thanks be to God for your generosity!

WE ARE THANKFUL FOR YOU!
