Raggant Standard

September 2022

Letter From The U.H.

Hello, ECS families! It's hard to believe that our summer vacation is nearly behind us and school will start next week. It has been a very eventful summer! I wanted to give you just a few updates, with more information coming next week in a special, Back-to-School edition of the Raggant Standard.  I'll fire them off, in no particular order.

As you may be aware, our Conditional Use of the Trinity Evangel Church building (as a school accommodating up to 210 students) from the City of Marysville was placed on hold until we could secure approval from the state Board of Education to operate as a private school.  After considerable counsel and deliberation, the ECS Board decided to pursue state approval.

Presently, after many exchanged emails and hours of back-and-forth between the Board and Olympia, we are being recommended for provisional "approved" status as a private school in Washington State.  The provisional status is due to some pieces being in the works that are necessary for state approval, but that we do not have just yet. For instance, two such items are reports from inspections by the Health Department and the Fire Department.

You may also be aware that we were pursuing exemptions on the matters of 1) State Certificated Teachers, and 2) Instructional Hours.  The state said they cannot grant these exemptions and recommend approval of any sort (i.e., provisional or otherwise).  Though a number of our teachers are formerly Washington State Certificated, one (Mrs. Sarr) has a current certificate (at least for the next nine months!) and will be our certificated representative.  We are in communication with the state regarding some long-term solutions to this calculated deviation from the standards.

On the matter of Instructional Hours, approved schools must have a calendar of 180 instructional days, or 1000 instructional hours.  The calendar we distributed at Orientation represented 174 instructional days and about 960 instructional hours. Again, after deliberation and debate, the Board agreed to try to squeeze 180 instructional days out of the published calendar (i.e., without lengthening the school year).  So our first day will still be Tuesday, September 6, and our last day will be Thursday, June 8.

However, our school-at-home days meet the criteria for "instructional days," so the easiest way to increase our instructional days total was to start there.  As such, we have added six additional school-at-home days.  Hopefully most families will realize no significant inconvenience related to this, and the teachers will work to be measured (read: "light") on those additional days at home.  They include...

  • the Monday designated for teacher training (October 24)
  • the three days prior to Thanksgiving (November 21-23)
  • the Monday prior to our return from Christmas break (January 2), and
  • the Friday that was formerly Mid-Winter Break (February 17, the Friday preceding Presidents' Day).

Again, these are school-at-home days, and the families will have discretion on how (and where) to conduct them, though we needed to include these in the calendar in order to get to 180 instructional days. This also means that any school closures (e.g., snow days) will necessarily shift to school-at-home days in order to be at 180 days without going past June 8.

Going forward, we will probably lengthen the school year on the front end, starting school the week prior to Labor Day in order to relieve some of the pressure during the school year.  Your input on this is most welcome.

Though it may not seem like it, I've tried to be brief here, omitting lots of details and context in the interest of brevity.  So if you have more questions, I'm glad to help answer those.  In the meantime, the next domino to fall is an inspection by the Health District on Friday morning (September 2) at 10:00am, so please pray that it goes well!

Risus est bellum!

Jonathan Sarr, the U.H.

Our first day of class will be Tuesday, September 6th!
  1. Plan to arrive early (around 8:45am) to get your student settled; Matins will begin promptly at 9am.
  2. This is a standard uniform day.
  3. As lunch will be later than normal, we recommend packing snacks to sustain your Raggant!
  4. Convocation will start @ 12:40pm with Mr. Sean Higgins speaking. Families are heartily encouraged to attend! Early dismissal will be @ 1:15pm, with the BBQ immediately following.
  5. ECS will provide the meat (burgers and hot dogs), buns, fixings, and paper goods. For remaining items, we ask for family participation. If your name starts with: A-H: Drinks, J-N: Desserts, O-Z: Sides
  6. Mrs. Bone could use some help with set-up and clean-up. If this is something that you are interested in, please email her (abone@evangelcs.org).
  7. If you weren't able to make it to Orientation, please bring your family supplies on the first day of school to Mrs. Bone's office (the sliding windows directly on your right as you enter the school).
  8. For Tuition payments, the box has been moved from Mr. Sarr's old office to Mrs. Bone's office, just above the light switch.
  9. Grey sweater vests for your Grammar child will be available for purchase (with and without embroidery) from Mrs. Bone. More will be arriving in late September, unless things change. If you have an unembroidered sweater vest, cardigan, or fleece, please note that Design Matrix Group (DMG) will no longer embroider individual items. Orders need to be in quantities of 12 or more.
  10. This is also a great time to make sure that your child's uniform pieces (especially ECS embroidered ones), lunchboxes, and water bottles are clearly labeled! These items fill up the lost and found very quickly.
Student Pick-up

Although it may be difficult and clunky at times, we take student safety and security seriously.  For this reason, recess and the end of the school day are particularly important and, at times, tricky.  As in years past, we'll have a pull through lane for the active loading of vehicles after school.  Read on (and see the picture!) for the details:
  • After school, students will stand with their classes until they are picked up by their parents.
  • When coming to pick up your children, please DO NOT ENTER via 90th St. Please DO enter campus at 88th St. by the Table building, or via 44th DR NE. 90th St. will be for EXIT ONLY.
  • Please drive slowly through the neighborhoods adjacent to campus.  Please keep the speedometer below 20 MPH.
  • Please utilize the spaces on South Campus (anything past the southern fence of the main lot) if you wish to park and stay at the school.  Secondarily, you may use the spaces along the east fence or the west fence.
  • Please DO NOT park along the south fence in the main lot; this will be a driveway.
  • Please DO NOT park in the middle section of the lot (inside the islands/beds); this will be a play area for students.
  • Please DO NOT park on the streets or outside the campus.
  • Please DO NOT park in the spaces nearest the front door (handicapped parking excepted) as this is where the students will line up for pick-up.
  • After 3:20, any students not yet picked up will be escorted into the building and can be picked up from the RecRoom by their parents.  .
The first day of school, we will have student pickup at 1:30; all are invited to the BBQ to follow!  Normally, school ends at 3:00 with student pickup at about 3:05.
Field Day will begin at 1:30pm on Thursday, September 8th. All the students will convene in the front of the building for big group games, followed by smaller groups of fun and competition. We will have regular dismissal at 3:05pm.

Please have your student pack a full water bottle this day and some comfortable running shoes. Parents are welcome to attend and cheer students on!

This is the first major competition for House Points for Secondary students; please remember your House bandanas!
Tuition Payments

The school does not currently have online or electronic means of receiving tuition payments. Please submit all monthly tuition payments by the 3rd of the month to either the box in Mrs. Bone's office, or mailed to the P.O. Box below.

If you have any questions about your payments or need a copy of your Financial Agreement, please contact Mrs. Bone (abone@evangelcs.org).

Book Covers

Many of your students will receive new textbooks this year, and we have asked them to cover those textbooks to keep them nice for as long as possible!

We ask you to cover the textbooks in one of two ways:
  • Either purchase re-usable covers like these from Amazon, which your student can keep and use on future texts.
  • Or cover them following a template like this which still provides coverage but does not require tape or other sticky materials (like Contact paper) to touch the book itself.
Per general communication, calendars, and planning, please note the following:
  • The school's phone number is (360) 502-6950. This phone is operated by Mrs. Aisha Bone, and you should utilize this number to communicate if your child is sick/missing school, running late, or if you will be late at pick-up. It is also a good number for general information (when is the Assembly? Where can I drop off my child's forgotten lunch?). Note that this number isn't checked on the weekends, but will be first thing on Monday mornings!
  • ECS Google Calendar
  • Twitter
  • ECS Parents' Facebook page (this is a closed group for parents and grandparents and requires Admin approval).
